He began his career in 90s when with a rock band Juniper. After leaving the band, he worked in Tuscany and worked on subways and streets around Europe before returning to Ireland clearer than ever and creating his solo career.
In 2002, Rice released his debut solo album "O", which won the Shortlist music prize. O is dedicated to Rice's friend Mic Christopher who died of a head injury in 2001.
Damien Rice wanted to make an album without the help of a major label, keeping the full creative control of his record, because according to him "if he signed to them before he had proven himself they would begin dictating to him and forcing him in a direction he didn't want to go."
His single The Blower's Daughter is known for appearing in such different medias like the 2004 movie Closer or the 2005 movie Stay and TV series like House M.D. and Lost.
In 2006, Damien Rice released his second studio album named "9" having has first single 9 Crimes. Actually this album has a mixed critical reactions, with NME giving 4/10 but Mojo and Q giving 4/5.
A curiosity about this record is that there's a song "Elephant" which the previous name was The Blower's Daughter Part 2.
Damien Rice is also a human rights activist, usually including musical contributions for charitable projects like Songs For Tibet or Enough Project.
