Scars & Stories, the third album from the American band, was recorded between March and July 2011 and produced by Brendan O'Brien.
On a performance, Isaac Slade explained the title Scars & Stories comes from a B-Side song that didn't appear on the tracklist for the album and the reason for the album's name.
"We've been through a lot of stuff personally, and as band we're still together, and I think we like the idea of scars you know, because they're healed you know. They are not like wounds necessarily, but they're still kind of a road map of where you been, and sometimes kinda point to where you want to go."
Using part of the album's budget to travel the world and inspire themselves, they wrote over 70 songs, choosing what they hope to be the best 12 songs, most heavily influenced by their travels.
Their first single Heartbeat was inspired by a trip to Rwanda, essentially the song is about "a woman escaping a horrible situation in the middle of the night and coming back to life" with the chorus reflecting the conversation Slade had with an expatriate woman who was talking about the genocides in that country, somewhere in the conversation she held his hand and as Isaac said on The Fray's official site "I felt so connected to her. I couldn't tell if it was her pulse or mine."
"Oh you got a fire and it's burnin' in the rain
Thought that it went out, but it's burnin' just the same
And you don't look back, not for anything
'Cause if you love someone, love them all the same
If you love someone, love them all the same"
