Almost
fresh out from Battle For The Sun, Placebo makes a comeback that can only be
defined as inspired. The first track is the name of the album itself, B3. While
you might not expect it, this is not old Placebo, and you will certainly figure
that out at first contact. Having that in mind, B3, the track, while throwing a
violent guitar sound a Molko who sings with a passion that has been seen on the
last album. The sound doesn't feel any different, Placebo is innovating for
sure, but the underground wave present since Meds is still a constant. It is a
fast track, no doubt about that, but not in a way that you would figure strange
for Placebo. Despite the heavy intro, the sound flows into a catchy chorus that
is comfortable to the ear.
If
you're a fan of the good old stuff, B3 has more for you than just a mere
beggining. I Know You Wanna Stop is a (well done) cover of the Minxus song.
Though not as addictive as the original, Molko's voice fits the bashing drums
that accompany the “we have have never met”. Despite the vocal change, the
sound is intact. A good reproduction, but nothing more. Despite the small
interruption, B3 will make you feel at home with The Extra. Slow pace, always
marked by Steve's heavy drums (which is a constant in the whole album and seems
to be a new characteristic of Placebo), a genius set of lyrics and Molko
reciting his disorientation in life will easily fit into the category of the
best track in the album. The strong dark wave from Pure Morning, tainted with
negativism, seems to gain a new face in this wonderful track. Fortunately, it
is not the last surprise.
I
Know Where You Live and Time is Money can be summarized in a brief comment
about the lyrical genius that lives inside Molko. Yes, Placebo is back, and it
is here to stay. This new EP marks both an evolution towards a less
Glam-influenced sound and a more tainted rhythm which can fit into an action
movie. Besides, the old sound has not been lost. An EP definitely worth
listening to, able to please both old fans and newcomers to the Placebo world.
