Review: Tame Impala "Lonerism" (2012)

Tame Impala are this creative band from Parth, in Australia, and is composed by Kevin ParkerDom Simper and Jay Watson. On live performances, Tame Impala also count with Nick "Paisley Adams" Allbrook and Julien Barbagallo.

In the end of 2012, Tame Impala started to be really talked about for their innovating and somehow familiar sound.
Their last record, Lonerism, was released on October 5th, 2012 through Modular Recordings, mostly by the main head of this band Kevin Parker who also produced and wrote most of the material from Lonerism, shortly after the release of Innerspeaker "I started writing songs straight after Innerspeaker, but I told myself I wouldn't get hung up with the pressure, so I kinda pretended they were for some other weird project that wasn't going to have as much consequence".

The artist responsible for the artwork of Lonerism is the Australian Leif Podhajsky, the picture was taken by Parker and represents the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris and later edited by Podhajsky.
This artwork really reflects the main theme of the record which is the isolation that can be represented by the metal gate that separates the viewer from the people.
About the cover, Parker explained to The Music Australia"I love the expression of people's faces in this picture. It's kind of this snap shot of life, and the more you examine, if you're going to get the vinyl version, you can really examine what's going on in the picture (...) and there's all this other sort of crazy shit if you look really hard. And the more you examine all these things, the more you realise you're really just perving from the other side of the fence."

The regular version of this record counts with twelve tracks composing a total of 51:53 minutes.

This is a very interesting record. It's almost inevitable not to compare Tame Impala with bands like The Beatles and Pink Floyd.
The entire album is like a journey, a fun travel with a thin line separating the dream world from our own reality.
Lonerism can easily be mentioned as one record from the late 60's or early 70's but at the same, it's also possible to find such a rich and modern sound underneath all the synths and hard drums.
Tame Impala are particularly exciting and that peculiar approach to music can be discovered along this record.

Their psychedelic rock sound was starting to be developed on their previous Innerspeaker but it's also clear the evolution from one record to the other.
Even though, Kevin Parker described the album as prequel from the previous one "[Lonerism is] quite a childish album, almost like a persona who turns into the one from Innerspeaker. That's kinda what I hear anyway", it's impossible not to get involved with this rich sound and sense of isolation, loneliness and confusion.

The mix between the psychedelic rock sonority and the electronic sound is genially worked, bringing a particular light and confidence to Lonerism. I would dare to say that Tame Impala takes it to a whole new level.
This second album can almost be described as an impulsive act of inner introspection and self-protection but it contrasts with the opposite side of being such a confident, powerful album. We can feel each line of the songs that brings up an enormous number of different feelings and emotions and that's such an interesting way of discovering it.

It's not usual to have such young bands focusing so much on long instrumentals and masterful melodies but it seems to me that Tame Impala aren't really a regular band and the way they take advantage of it is really impressive. They know what they are doing (especially Kevin Parker).

No matter how you try to define Tame Impala or even Lonerism but we all must agree that it can be magical and confusing, at the same time. What they are able to bring to their songs is, honestly, powerful and touching. From psychedelic to calm and dreamy, different words can come across your mind while defining this band and its work but Tame Impala really have a bright and long future in front of them because they are talented and they know how to work it out.

Must-listen songs: Apocalypse Dreams, Elephant, Why Won't They Talk To Me?

Conclusion: Lonerism is a very strong, modern and powerful album. It's hard to define but I deeply suggest you to embrace the experience that is to listen to this album. Tame Impala are such creative minds and I must highlight Kevin Parker that is becoming one of the most promising musicians of the last years.  It's a must-listen record, released in 2012 and I can't wait to have the chance to see Tame Impala on a live performance.
