This song is called Memory (link to the show's performance here) and it is by far the most famous and popular song from this musical and it is the climax of the musical. It’s sung by Elaine Page – as Grizabella.
Elaine Page is a British singer and actress known by her works in musical theaters. Borned in 5 March 1948, she started her career in 1968. She has released 22 solo albums, of which eight were consecutively certified gold and another four multi-platinum.
She has been called the First Lady of British Musical Theatre.
The song is a nostalgic memory of Grizabella's past and a declaration of her wishes to start a new life.
The lyrics were written by Trevor Nunn and were based on T. S. Eliot's poems "Preludes" and "Rhapsody on a Windy Night".
Memory, all alone in the moonlight
I can smile at the old days
I was beautiful then
I remember the time I knew what happiness was
Let the memory live again
Burnt out ends of smokey days
The stale cold smell of morning
The streetlamp dies, another night is over
Another day is dawning
Now if you don’t mind I will get up and give this lady a strong applause.
