themed week // Arcade Fire, Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

I started this themed week related with Indie artists, with Arcade Fire.

Arcade Fire are considered one of the most alternative bands, giving them this extra for being such creators and with the characteristic for being discovered by David Bowie and popularized on U2's Vertigo tour on Canadian cities.
This canadian band, composed by Win Butler, Régine Chassagne, Richard Reed Parry, William Butler, Tim Kingsbury, Sarah Neufeld and Jeremy Gara, released three albums - Funeral (2004), Neon Bible (2007) and The Suburbs (2010) and two EPs - Arcade Fire (2003, re-released in 2005) and Live EP (2005).

Neighborhood #3 (Power Out) appears on their first album Funeral. Funeral is related, as suggested by the title, this albums talks about death, but in a positive way. The album received this title because several band members lost someone close during the album process.
Funeral is considered one of the best albums of 2004 and was well received by critics and fans.

With much more than 5 minutes, Neighborhood #3 was the third single of this record.
This song was written by Régine Chassagne and Win Butler, and it's about Montreal during the North American Ice Storm in 1998, and the respective one week blackout. The mysterious and metaphoric way that Neighborhood #3 is written, brings the idea of under messages behind the lyrics, including political views.
The lyrics also reveals Butler's idea that no one can completely hide a secret: "lot of people have [the idea] that there are aspects of your life that are hidden or secret … But I think that people are pretty much open book."

"I woke up on the darkest night,
neighbors all were shoutin' that they found the light.

("We found the light")
Shadows jumpin' all over my walls
some of them big, some of them small."
