The Smiths, There Is A Light That Never Goes Out

The Smiths are an English alternative rock band from Manchester, created in 1982.
Composed by Morrissey (vocals), Johnny Marr (guitar) and later Andy Rourke (bass) and Mike Joyce (drums) they are usually considered one of the most important alternative rocks bands appearing on the English music scenario.

On an interview given in 1984, Morrissey affirmed that band's name was chosen to be The Smiths for being "so common" and because "it was a time where common people would show their faces" contrasting this way with fancy names like Spandau Ballet.

They ended only 5 years later, thanks to some problems related with the group mentors Morrissey and Marr.

The band is known for hits like How Soon Is Now?, This Charming Man or There Is A Light That Never Goes Out.
Releasing four studio albums - The Smiths (1984), Meat Is Murder (1985), The Queen Is Dead (1986) and Strangeways, Here We Come (1987) - besides a live record and several compilations, from 1982 to 1987, make The Smiths a rare case of success with a short history.

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out originally featured The Smiths' third record The Queen Is Dead from 1986, but was only released as single five years after the band split up in 1995, due to the compilation Best II.
The song was written as a symmetry with Bigmouth Strikes Again, sharing the same key and similar chords.

There are some theories about this song's meaning, one of them appears on Simon Goddard's book Songs That Saved Your Life telling this song had huge similarities with the story Rebel Without A Case featuring James Dean - Morrisey's idol - "leaves his torturous home life, being the passenger to a potential romantic partner."
Many music critics consider this song to be one of the best The Smiths' song, due to the "perfect balance between Marr's compositional skills and Morrissey's lyricism".

"And if a double-decker bus
Crashes into us
To die by your side
Such a heavenly way to die
And if a ten-ton truck
Kills the both of us
To die by your side
Well, the pleasure and the privilege is mine"
