The Killers, Runaways

The Killers are an American rock band, known for hits like Mr. Brightside, Somebody Told MeWhen You Were Young, Human or Spaceman.

The band was created in 2001 and the members are composed by Brandon Flowers (vocals and keyboards), Dave Keuning (guitars and backing vocals), Ronnie Vannucci Jr. (drums and percussion) and Mark Stoermer (bass guitar and backing vocals).
On live performances, and due to the amount of instruments they record on studio creating their incredibly amazing and rich music background sounds, they count with Rob Whited (percussion and backing vocals), Jake Blanton (guitars, keyboards and backing vocals) and Ted Sablay (guitars and keyboards).

So far, they have released three studio albums: Hot Fuss (2004), Sam's Town (2006) and Day & Age (2008). A forth album is set to be released next September 2012 with the name Battle Born.

Battle Born is a phrase that appears on the state flag of Nevada, from where the band is from.
There are some songs that were confirmed to be on the record's tracklist: Heart of a Girl, Flesh and Bone, Carry Me Home and the first confirmed single Runaways.

Runaways has a clear Bruce Springsteen influence, as mentioned on reviews by NME or Rolling Stone Magazine. This song is really the opposite of dancy songs like Human or Spaceman from their previous album but it's without any question a Killers song.
It's totally rock, full of darkness but a bit of light somewhere that brings us hope. With a strong story and followed by really well played instruments that really characterizes the band, it's good to accomplish "The Killers are back!"
Nevertheless, it's a powerful single, which brings some huge excitement to the rest of Battle Born.

"And I came home after they go to sleep
Like a stumbling ghost, I haunt this house
There's a picture of us on our wedding day
I recognize the proof but I can't settle in these walls

Review: Brandon Flowers "Flamingo" (2010)

Brandon Flowers
Flamingo
Sep 3, 2010
Brandon Flowers, also known for being the lead singer of the american band The Killers, released his first solo album "Flamingo" in 2010.

This album appears after The Killers announced their "hiatus" and after it a mysterious countdown appeared on The Killers official website, Brandon Flowers confirmed on April 29, 2010 he would be releasing his solo album named "Flamingo" has a tribute to Flamingo Road in his favorite city and hometown Las Vegas, also where Sam's Town (The Killers album) is, his first job was at a golf course on that same road and how he met his wife.

The album "Flamingo" was produced by Stuart Price, Daniel Lanois and Brendan O'Brien. The song "Hard Enough" features a duet with Jenny Lewis.

With a very rock/country style, Brandon also revealed in a interview that probably this songs could belong to The Killers but since they've made a Hiatus he took the chance and recorded it has is solo.
  1. Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas (4:50) : Here Brandon shows his love for Las Vegas, with a very sounding guitar background with a very synthetic beginning and mixing the piano with Flowers' characteristic voice very melodical. Brandon uses his passion and wrote a very welcoming song for Las Vegas. Brandon Flowers had the talent to make this a very sounding song and after listening for several times, gets stuck in your head.

"Give us your dreamers, your harlots and your sin
    Las Vegas
Didn't nobody tell you the house will always win?"
  2. Only The Young (4:19) : Probably my favorite from the album, very energetic. I've already talk about it here, it's so strong, with so much meaning. Brandon created everything when he thought oh this song. It's absolutely amazing, the change of instruments - the soft jungle drum at the beginning, to the very raw guitar after it. Absolutely good, with epic lyrics!

"Only the young can break away, break away
Lost when the wind blows, on your own"
  3. Hard Enough (4:06) : This songs talks about losing someone and ways to get over it. Personally means very much to me, I've lost too much people on my life and this song is like a reminder. Remembers me that i'm not the only one who've felt it and somehow it's like a cheer up song, a keep going one. The piano at the chorus it's gorgeous, the rhythm drums at the end are flawless so so so stunning, the guitar following Brandon's and Jenny Lewis vocals is so well done. A very gorgeous arrangement.

"And when the water gets high above your head
    Darling, don't you see
While this has been hard enough for you
It's been hard enough for me"
  4. Jilted Lovers & Broken Hearts (4:43) : Probably the beginning reminds of a song from a drama soundtrack, but afterwards Brandon changes everything and turns it faster, romantic and almost sounding a love story, like he is singing it to some lost (or not) lover. Once more the background instruments are amazingly strong and suit very good with the type of song. I totally see it on a soundtrack's drama/romantic movie, FOR REAL! Well done, very well done Mr. Flowers.

"You know I know we were in trouble but honey I almost cried
    When I saw you dancing
    On the moon now
I watched him spin you round and round
Why did you roll your dice? Show your cards?
    Jilted lovers and broken hearts"
  5. Playing in Fire (5:50) : This song is absolutely worth it for his country rock inspirations. So slow, so nice, so deep. I would listen to a sunset or during a reflexive moment, the lyrics are so deep, so self-conscious, so dangerous at the same time. Deep is the key word for this song, the long instrumental introduction suits so perfectly, so cutely, so kindly in every word and moment of this song. It's hard to choose just a specific moment of this song, because the hole makes the sureness, completes in a very strange way, complete makes the perfect sense, apart makes the half way.

"Daddy, I'm not gonna tell you that I'm sorry,
But there ain't nothing you can do to change my mind."
  6. Was It Something I Said? (3:21) : After a very self-conscious moment, very introspective, Brandon changed the parade and put a very funny and dancy song. The lyrics are very soft. Maybe I would not use it on this album, for me it's the weakest song from "Flamingo" besides being so funny and changing the mood of this so respectful and somehow scary album, for being much deeper than I expected at first sight. Still a good music for Flowers and country music's fans.

"She said, "I didn't wanna do it
but I did it 'cause I didn't wanna break your heart""
  7. Magdalena (3:19) : Sounds too much of non-the killers, I know. A small mistake but for a guy who told this songs could perfectly fit in The Killers, "Magdalena" sounds slightly off. Still a very interesting song with a huge highlight for the instruments, mainly the guitar which has a huge matter on this songs, making it almost epic. Very good choice in instrumental matter.

"The summer left her without forgiveness
It's mirrored in her children's eyes"
  8. Crossfire (4:18) : The first single of the album. A very good song in every single possible way! Powerful, with meaning, hidden messages. I keep fascinated with the hole idea of this song, I get excited every time this song gets stuck in my head. Crossfire is interesting in every ways. The video concept it's so good, the idea of Brandon Flowers being saved every time by a very beautiful and athletic woman Charlize Theron (Oscar winner, actress and ex-south african model). This strong is another deep song, another unexpected surprise a very good one. Gets me chills since the first time I've heard it for being so powerful and damaging.

"And we're caught up in the crossfire
    Of heaven and hell
    And we're searching for shelter
    Lay your body down..."
  9. On The Floor (3:25) : I liked this song but after listening the acoustic version Brandon shared on his youtube channel. Once more, Brandon decided to follow the hard path and wrote a meaningful song, with a very catchy background. Sounds very good but I would use it has a single, a good song but I'm not sure if it is that good to appear on album.

"Where the children all stomped and screamed
    Straight out the door
Well i find my self on my knees
    Begging please
When the lights go down in the city
And everyone goes to their room
    Walking the trail
    To dreamland"
  10. Swallow It (2:57) : Somehow I find this song extremely funny. This song is so interesting, the beating and violin sound so irresistible here. Flowers' vocals are so crazily enjoyable although the differences, here we can understand some chances on Brandon's voice. Bad thing? Too short, had all the potential to extend a bit more, would make me much happier. It's a shame this song being so short but very very very good!

    "You could not Swallow It
No baby you're not ready, slow down
And take the time to evolve"
  11. The Clock Was Tickin' (4:49) [Bonus Track]

  12. Jacksonville (4:04) [Bonus Track]

  13. I Came Here To Get Over You (2:23) [Bonus Track]

  14. Right Behind You (3:53) [Bonus Track] PS I would change this song for the regular tracklist and take the ones I find weak compared to others. This song is so beautiful!

For being Bonus tracks I will just share the songs and won't talk about it, since they belong to the deluxe version and not the regular one.

Conclusion: This is a very good album. Full of new discoveries and genres, but somehow with a lake of attention on the track list. Changing orders and this album would have the high level. Brandon is more than a singer and he proves it here on the entire album that he is more than the cute boy from The Killers. A very sounding album for music lovers and a must-have on everyone's home.
