After Chapman graduated from Tufts in 1987, her father helped her to sign a contract with Elektra Records.
At Elektra, she released Tracy Chapman (1988). The album was critically acclaimed, and she began touring and building a fanbase. The album sold well and won three Grammy Awards, including an honor for Chapman as Best New Artist.

2008: Our Bright Future

This music is the second single from her first album. You can notice a clear subject: politics. This song received heavy radio play in Tunisia in 2011 during the Tunisian Revolution.

Why this one today hn?
Well, first of all it’s April 25th, it’s the 27th anniversary of “Revolução dos Cravos” that happened in Portugal, as you can hear a few times during the music “They are talking about a revolution”. But it also talks about people lifes and it represents quite well how nowadays we are living here, in our country, I mean.. poorly. People are not happy with the way they live and the way our government leads Portugal, that’s for sure.

Don't you know
They're talkin' about a revolution
It sounds like a whisper
While they're standing in the welfare lines
Crying at the doorsteps of those armies of salvation
Wasting time in the unemployment lines
Sitting around waiting for a promotion
Poor people gonna rise up
And get their share
Poor people gonna rise up
And take what's theirs

A.
