themed week // The Police, Every Breath You Take

The Police are a very successful English band from the 70's and 80's, known for hits like Every Breath You Take, Roxanne or Message In The Bottle.

The band was created in 1977 by Sting (lead vocals and bass), Andy Summers (guitars) and Stewart Copeland (drums).

After some endings and returns - thanks to the band's creative issues - The Police had several restarts never recording any studio album after Synchronicity.

They've released 5 albums as The Police - Outlandos D'Amour (1978), Reggatta de Blanc (1979), Zenyattà Mondatta (1980), Ghost In The Machine (1981) and Synchronicity (1983).

Every Breath You Take is the first single taken from Synchronicity and also one of the best known songs of the band.
Synchronicity was very well received by critics and public and got the number 1 on several charts for a few weeks - in the UK and the US. Not mentioning the countless awards from this album and respective single.
Sting usually says this song is about the obsession with a lost lover, the jealousy and every consequences from that.
"I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, (...) but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realize at the time how sinister it is." - said Sting.

The video has a dark aura around it, thanks to the obsessive thematic - using the black & white ideology to create a heavy atmosphere, giving that dark and sinister sense from the theme.

Several artists like UB40 and the country singer Mason Dixon covered the song. Other artists like P. Diddy used the song's beginning riff to one of his songs I'll Be Missing You as a tribute to The Notorious B.I.G.

"Since you've gone I've been lost without a trace
I dream at night I can only see your face
I look around, but it's you I can't replace
I feel so cold and I long for your embrace
I keep crying baby, baby, please"
