Tame Impala, Elephant

Tame Impala are this creative band from Parth, in Australia, and is composed by Kevin Parker, Dom Simper and Jay Watson. On live performances, Tame Impala also count with Nick "Paisley Adams" Allbrook and Julien Barbagallo.

So far, they've released two albums: Innerspeaker (2010) and Lonerism (2012), besides two Eps and other works between remixes and collaborations.

Creative is really the most accurate word to describe them as they describe on their biography "psychedelic hypno-groove melodic rock music" as the definition of their sound.
The obvious references are, surely, The Beatles, Pink Floyd but this young band don't forget to mix some early Indie groove, without mentioning the amount of different synths and effects used along the songs.
To highlight: the magnificent voice of Kevin Parker who is stunningly similar to John Lennon.

About the record, a friend of mine (which you can find more here) finely described what I felt the first time I got to listen to Tame Impala: "'Lonerism' is, indeed, a showcase of what's good and still can be done in indie rock. (...) One of the most exciting albums of 2012. Exciting because listening to a bunch of kids doing this type of music, makes me realise there's still hope for Rock." - check his post about Tame Impala here.

Elephant is a song taken from their Lonerism, becoming the first official single of their 2012 album on July 26, 2012.
This song is one of those songs that will become timeless - all the effortless construction, all its easy approach, connection and sense of another "dimension"are strong components in this song and it really makes music lovers fall in love with Tame Impala - for being so unique but resembling those old classic rock bands.

Pink Floyd was a British progressive rock band, created in 1965 and composed by Roger Waters, Richard Wright, Nick Mason, Syd Barrett later replaced by David Gilmour.

With fourteen studio albums released, they became one of the most successful progressive rocks bands of all times - for epic songs like Wish You Were Here, Another Brick In The Wall - Part 2 and Comfortably Numb.

Mother is a song taken from Pink Floyd's album The Wall.
According to Waters in an interview for Mojo magazine, he said "The idea that we can be controlled by our parents' views on things like sex. The single mother of boys, particularly, can make sex harder than it needs to be."


The Wall is about Pink's story - an alienated and unfortunate rock star. On the song Mother is explained that part of Pink's alienation comes from being raised by a overprotective single mother, that lost her husband in World War II - just like Waters.
On this song is explained how protective Pink's mother is and how much she wants to help her son to "build the wall" and protect him from the outside and hurtful world.

themed week // Scissor Sisters, Comfortably Numb (Pink Floyd)

Scissor Sisters are an American Pop/Rock band, nowadays composed by Jake Shears (vocals, piano and guitar), Babydaddy (bass guitar, keyboards and rhythm guitar), Ana Matronic (vocals, "mistress of Ceremonies", percussion and keyboards), Del Marquis (lead guitars and bass guitars) and Randy Real (drums and percussion) and created in 2001 in New York.

The band that described themselves as "spawned by the scuzzy, gay nightlife scene of New York" has released three albums: Scissor Sisters (2004), Ta-Dah (2006), Night Work (2010) and Magic Hour that is set to be released on May 2012.

Comfortably Numb is an original Pink Floyd song, written by Roger Waters and David Gilmour. The song appears on the double 1979 album The Wall.

The Wall tells the story of Pink - Comfortably Numb is about Pink's battle to handle the world. While Waters represents a doctor treating Pink, Gilmour does the Pink's thoughts.

This Scissor Sisters version appears on their debut self-titled album released in 2004, the cover reached several tops and received the Grammy nomination for Best Dance Recording.

Pink Floyd, a British Progressive rock band created in 1965 and composed by Roger Waters (vocals, bass guitar, guitars, percussion, programming), Richard Wright (keyboards, vocals, organ, piano, synthesizers, mellotron), Nick Mason (drums, percussion, programming), David Gilmour (vocals, lead guitar, bass guitar, keyboards, special effects). Syd Barrett (vocals and guitars) and Bob Klose also made part of Pink Floyd's formation at the beginning of the band's career.

Known for songs like Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb or Hey You, the band has released 14 studio albums - The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (1967), A Saucerful of Secrets (1968), Soundtrack from the Film More (1969), Ummagumma (1969), Atom Heart Mother (1970), Meddle (1971), Obscured by Clouds (1972), The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), Wish You Were Here (1975), Animals (1977), The Wall (1979), The Final Cut (1983), A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994) besides 3 live albums and several compilations.

Another Brick In The Wall - Part II belongs to one of the best known Pink Floyd albums The Wall and is the second of a three-part song all included on the same album.

On the plot of the movie with the same name that features the artist and activist Bob Geldof - representing the character based on Waters himself "Pink", this song appears "After being insulted by the teacher, Pink dreams that the kids in his school begin to protest against their abusive teachers."

Interview // With Bernardo Figueiredo

Bernardo Figueiredo, a 17-year-old guitarist full of dreams giving his first steps in the music world.
Last week, he gave me a very interesting interview surrounded of honesty and a very cool afternoon in the middle of a park.

Fuck Yeah Music Stories: How did you start into the music world?
Bernardo: Around my 13 years, when I received my first electric guitar at Christmas. After I started to have classes.

FYMS: How do you think your music formation is?
B: I think it's not that good. Anybody that really loves music thinks their formation is already good enough and I think there's never going to be a moment that I'll say that I'm done learning.

FYMS: Tell me some artists that really inspire you.
B: Probably, first is Eric Clapton, than is Slash, AC/DC and The Doors.

FYMS: What do you think about the importance given to music, in Portugal?
B: I think we still don't give much importance here and it's not a world that is very explored. There are a lot of underrated artists in Portugal exactly because there's no one to discover them.

FYMS: Would you bet on Portuguese music?
B: Nowadays I wouldn't bet in Portugal. Maybe one day I will but not from the past or present.

FYMS: Which are your biggest dreams?
B: In terms of career my dream is to have a successful career and explore the maximum number of areas and instruments and absolutely a solid music formation.
Personally, be happy. That's all I want.

FYMS: The hardest moment in your life?
B: My father's death.

FYMS: How did that influenced you as a person and as a musician?
B: As a person, I think it made me enjoy every happy moment I have, without underestimating it nor having my happiness for guaranteed, made me realize it's the most precious thing I have.
As a musician, I give much more value to music with a greater emotional message and written with more feeling.

FYMS: How would you describe yourself as an artist?
B: Probably I would describe me as a Dreamer, Confident, Obsessive and Passionate.

FYMS: Did your formation in Visual Arts changed your vision of the world, in any way?
B: Yes. Made me realize that the music area is the one that really pulls for me, what gives me more pleasure and the one I really want to explore.

FYMS: What's the maddest thing you've ever done?
B: I'm more crazy than mad, those are very different things. My maddest moment is yet to happen.

FYMS: Which is your next step in the music world?
B: My next step is the Hot Club Jazz, in Lisbon, that's what I'm going to do the next years.

FYMS: I know you have some live experiences. What did you feel the first time you went to stage?
B: I think there's really nothing we can think about. Everything erases from your memory, you stop seeing things, you just feel them. If you love what you do, you feel that is real and true.

FYMS: Do you prefer to be a solo artist or be part of a band?
B: The best is to start in a band and end up with a solo career. I think that a band it's the best beginning there is, at least, that's what history has shown us.

FYMS: An artist you would give everything to trade with?
B: Eric Clapton, absolutely. I would trade right away.

FYMS: An artist that had surprised you recently?
B: Led Zeppelin - It's one of my biggest inspirations. They have a very uncommon geniality that I didn't know or at least I did underestimated. It's one of those things that really surprised me. I had to listen Led Zeppelin with all my attention to understand it.

FYMS: The best show you've ever been to?
B: Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck in London.

FYMS: And the one you regret to have missed?
B: Every time I see a show that I want to go, I buy the ticket. When I like, I never regret because I know what I'm going to. It's money well spent.

FYMS: Artists that have disappointed you.
B: I'm going to say Pink Floyd and Dire Straits. Pink Floyd because they're too valued for something they aren't that good and Dire Straits for not being as much successful as Mark Knopler's solo career.

FYMS: Do you associate music to moments of your life?
B: Yes, but I associate to phases not moments. At some phase of my life I would only listen to Metal just for revolt, that's the best example.

FYMS: A song that will never be out of fashion.
B: Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton- it's a timeless classic. Back In Black by AC/DC it's one of my bases as a musician.

FYMS: Complete this sentences...

B: ... I'll be playing for millions of people, that's kind of my dream
b) The best thing people can say about me...
B: ...Is about my effort, passion and hard work about what I do, it's good when people notice it.

B: ...To give up my dreams.

B: ... I don't think about my future very much, I love to live day by day. Sometimes, it's hard for me to think what to do on the next day. This exercise is hard for me, absolutely useless.

FYMS: What would you tell to FYMS readers?
B: Always believe in yourself because everyone has its value.

Pink Floyd, Another Brick In The Wall - Part 2

This shows a bit of my last gig, when I went to Pavilhão Atlântico - March 22, to see Roger Waters live playing my favorite Pink Floyd album "The Wall". Those kids that appear on stage, are portuguese children that live in Cova da Moura, one of the most problematic neighbourhoods in Lisbon. 


Another Brick In TheWall, Part 2 is probably one of the most known and recognizable song by Pink Floyd, not the best but is absolutely part of them!

The hole idea, the hole songs, the hole melodies, the entire show, the final story of the Wall was ALL but ALL created by Mr. Roger Waters. This 81:23 minutes of music came all from that man's head. He did this EPIC ALBUM all by himself, and that is absolutely extraordinary, IMPRESSIVE!

Pink Floyd, Goodbye Blue Sky

This week I had the opportunity to see the creater and the genius behind this amazing album, which is one of my favorites The Wall (1979).
"The Wall is a rock opera that explores abandonment and isolation, symbolised by a metaphorical wall. The songs create an approximate storyline of events in the life of the protagonist, Pink, a character based on Waters, whose father was killed during the Second World War (as was Waters'). Pink is oppressed by his overprotective mother, and tormented at school by tyrannical, abusive teachers. Each of these traumas become metaphoric, "bricks in the wall". The protagonist eventually becomes a rock star, his relationships marred by infidelity, drug use, and outbursts of violence. As his marriage crumbles, he finishes building his wall, completing his isolation from human contact.

Hidden behind his wall, Pink's crisis escalates, culminating in an hallucinatory on-stage performance where he believes that he is a fascist dictator performing at concerts similar to Neo-Nazi rallies, at which he sets men on fans he considers unworthy. Tormented with guilt, he places himself on trial, his inner judge ordering him to "tear down the wall", opening Pink to the outside world. The album turns full circle with its closing words "Isn't this where...", the first words of the phrase that begins the album, "...we came in?", with a continuation of the melody of the last song hinting at the cyclical nature of Waters' theme.

The album includes several references to former band member Syd Barrett, including "Nobody Home", which hints at his condition during Pink Floyd's abortive US tour of 1967, with lyrics such as "wild, staring eyes", "Hendrix perm" and "Gohills Boots". "Comfortably Numb", was inspired by Waters' injection with a muscle relaxant to combat the effects of hepatitis during the In the Flesh Tour.^{" from wikipedia}
