themed week // Snow Patrol, In The End

On this Themed Week I'm going to talk about some of the artists I'm most eager to see on the Portuguese festival Optimus Alive.

Snow Patrol are a indie rock band from Scotland, at University of Dundee in 1994.
Nowadays the band is formed by Gary Lightbody (vocals and rhythm guitar), Jonny Quinn (drums and percussion), Nathan Connolly (lead guitar and backing vocals), Paul Wilson (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Johnny McDaid (piano, keyboards, rhythm guitar and backing vocals).

Since the signed up with a major label - Polydor Records, in 2002 they've released four albums: Final Straw (2003), Eyes Open (2006), A Hundred Million Suns (2008) and Fallen Empires (2011).

In The End is the fourth single taken from their last Fallen Empires.
A song that seems to talk about someone wishing the relationship would be as they were before lies got between those two people. Although that person doesn't want to know the truth because it's hard, just wants to keep things easy and light just like they were.

On the band's website, Gary said "My idea was to make an MGM musical style video. The incredible Brett Simon (who directed the last two also) again took my kernel of an idea scrawled drunkenly on the back of a cocktail napkin and turned it into something truly magical and way beyond anything I could have imagined or hoped for."
He also added "Such a lovely day and the video is going to look so beautiful. We have now made three great videos for this album but this one is already my favorite. That said, I've never had more fun on a set than I did at the 'Called Out in the Dark' shoot, but in terms of visual delight, I can tell this one is gonna top them all."

They are performing on the first day of this festival, on July 13, around 9.10pm on the main stage.
And certainly they will perform this song and others like Called Out In The Dark, Shut Your Eyes, Chasing Cars and Run.

News // More confirmed acts on Optimus Alive 2012

More artists have been added on the last days to the Portuguese festival happening in Algés.

The recently created Portuguese project Miúda is going to perform on Optimus Alive! on July 13 on the Palco Heineken, on the same day as Justice, Snow Patrol or LMFAO.
On the same day the North-american Dum Dum Girls will perform on the same alternative stage.

On July 14, performing on the same day as Florence + The Machine, Mumford And Sons and The Cure, there will be Big Deal, Here We Go Magic and Lisa Hanningan, all on the Palco Heineken.

News // More names on Optimus Alive 2012

SebastiAn and Refused are the new names added to the Portuguese festival.

The Swedish band Refused and the French DJ SebastiAn are performing on this year's edition of Optimus Alive respectively on July 13 and July.

Refused were created in 1991 and released three albums until their split up in 1998. This year they are returning with performances on several festivals. On this festival they will perform on Palco Optimus, along with Justice and Snow Patrol.

The French DJ and producer SebastiAn is performing on the alternative stage Palco Heineken. On the same day as Florence + The Machine and Mumford And Sons.

News // LMFAO and Warpaint on Optimus Alive 2012

Last Friday, two more names have been added to the Portuguese festival Optimus Alive!

The duo LMFAO, that are performing in Portugal next March on sold out Porto and Lisbon's coliseums, are returning in July 13 to perform on the alternative stage Palco Heineken, on the same day as Snow Patrol and Justice. Redfoo and Sky Blu are known for hits like Sexy And I Know It (see the video above) and Party Rock Anthem.

Warpaint (on the picture) the fourth north-american girls, known for songs like Elephants or Undertow, are performing on the last day of the festival, July 15th on the same day as The Kills, Radiohead or Caribou.

News // Mumford and Sons on Optimus Alive 2012

Mumford and Sons are performing in Portugal.

The English band are performing for the first time in Portugal, on Optimus Alive.

They are performing on July 14, on the same day as Florence + The Machine and The Cure confirmed for the second day of this festival that's happening between July 13 to 15 on Passeio Marítimo de Algés.

News // PAUS on Optimus Alive 2012

They are the first Portuguese band confirmed on this year's edition of Optimus Alive.

PAUS, composed by Joaquim Albergaria, Hélio Morais, Makoto Yagyu and João "Shela" Pereira are going to perform on the main stage - Palco Optimus - along with bands like Radiohead and Metronomy, on July 15.

The confirmed names for Optimus Alive'12 are:

News // Ed Sheeran's new video Drunk

A few days ago we published Ed Sheeran's new single - Drunk.

Last Sunday, the official new video was launched on Sheeran's Youtube account as promised previously on his own Facebook page.

"Drunk is the forth single taken from +, and it's a collaboration between Ed Sheeran andJake Gosling, who also produced the song. The single is going to be released on a Digital format without any predictions of a physical version."

Ed Sheeran, Drunk

Ed Sheeran is considered to be one of 2011 discoveries on the English music scene, and Sheeran career is an incredible story.

He released an album + on September 9 2011, sold over 900.000 copies being incredibly well received by critics and achieving fans around the world with songs like The A Team or Lego House.

Last Saturday, on January 14, he revealed on his Twitter account his next single - Drunk.
On the same tweet, he also added that there would be 2 videos.
The first one is already released on Ed Sheeran's Youtube account and according to himself on Facebook the first one is a video with sneak-peaks of his fans and gigs. About the other video there's just known that he filmed with a cat and it's expected to be released very soon.

Drunk is the forth single taken from +, and it's a collaboration between Ed Sheeran and Jake Gosling, who also produced the song. The single is going to be released on a Digital format without any predictions of a physical version.

News // The Cure on Optimus Alive 2012

The English band The Cure are the newest confirmation to this festival.

The band was confirmed on a Press conference about Optimus Alive'12 becoming part of names like Radiohead, Snow Patrol or Justice.

The Cure are going to perform on July 14th, the same day as Florence And The Machine.

According to Álvaro Covões from Everything is New - responsible for this festival in Algés - The Cure were initially thought to perform on the last year's edition but as their manager revealed Robert Smith decided only to play in one festival, not including Optimus Alive.

On the same press conference, Álvaro Covões revealed big Portuguese names would be announced very soon.

Once again, the festival will have a partnership with CP and you can purchase a daily ticket with the train ticket for Cascais line included for 55€, or a three-day pass for the same line for 111€.
Like the other editions, CP will have special trains after the shows.

Due to setbacks like happened last year, with some concerts being forced to cancel, Everything is New's representative revealed that a new stage was built.

Pat: 2011 Music Retrospection

This was a very strong year in terms of music for me.

Musically, we were desolated by Amy Winehouse’s death or Adele’s illness but still good music was done and thankfully this was a very special year for me, mainly because we started this project Fuck Yeah Music Stories and consequently made me see Music with very different eyes – more objective, attentive and with way more pleasure than I had before.

This is my TOP of favorites of this year.

I’ve (re)discovered a lot this entire year and this was a very introspective and hard list to make.

Albums released this year:

• Owl City, All Things Bright and Beautiful: There’s something about this artist that I truly loved. Besides everything this album is beautiful and honest. We can get thousand of interpretations of each song. Musically it’s absolutely interesting and we discover a new thing at each play. Kamikaze, Dreams Don’t Turn To Dust or Galaxies are very different songs that compose this record.

• The Gift, Explode: This year was their consummation. They are an extremely talented band and Explode shares a way colorful interpretation of themselves. It’s a discovery, a funny ride through songs like RGB, The Singles or Primavera. I absolutely recommend this record to everyone who honestly loves music. There’s something magical about Explode and The Gift, maybe they just breathe music and that’s what we get.

• My Chemical Romance, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys: This new record is intense but it sounds a lot like My Chemical Romance. Songs like Sing or Planetary (Go!) are young but also spread their talent and rock/punk way of seeing the world. Their themes are so interesting to discover, and when you do, you change all your thoughts about them! Let’s make a revolution and fight for our ideas.

• Foster The People, Torches: Foster The People are this young band with grown up ideas. This record is solid, strong and with meaning. Torches is absolutely one of the best records of 2011 for me with songs like Pumped Up Kicks or Call It What You Want made this music world way more interesting. They made me believe in contemporary music.

• Coldplay, Mylo Xyloto: Coldplay are Coldplay and this album is the ultimate confirmation of their talent. Paradise or Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall are part of this incredible and strong album. After hearing the album we can’t really find words to describe it. They exceeded themselves once again and I’m not shocked because they know their value and how good they are and this record shows exactly that.

• Luisa Sobral, The Cherry On My Cake: Luisa Sobral is an absolutely amazing artists and this is a brutal album. That jazzy-pop mixed style with a very characteristic voice, makes her one of the Portuguese revelations of 2011 and this album is the consummation of her talent, leaving the certain she also has much more talent and creativity to share.

•   Márcia, Dá: I really love Márcia and her album. Dá is a simple word which is translated as “Give” and she gives so much to music, her simple words followed by beautiful melodies and a stunning voice makes this a must-have album for everyone! Every record should follow a simple guide line – beautiful vocals, stunning instrumental and amazing lyrics. There’s nothing wrong about this album. It’s so personal but at the same time to freaking weird for being so simple. I always say “Simplicity Wins!” and it does!

• Beirut, The Rip Tide: Beirut are my secret passion of this year. Everything they do, they do with pleasure and this album influenced by European music and old-fashioned American Pop is an inspiration. Since the first time I got the album I can’t get tired of it! It’s a constant discovery, a constant travel. This must be a travel soundtrack, if it isn’t I will travel just do it myself. It’s really an inspiration, so calm, full of beauty and reminding me so much of ending days watching sunsets on beaches.

• You Can't Win Charlie Brown, Chromatic: They are part of the revelation bands/artists in the Portuguese scenario. They are incredible, with songs like Over The Sun/Under The Water makes them so curious and interesting to discover. You Can’t Win, Charlie Brown are one of those absolutely worth it bands because after listening their songs we have the feeling they still have so much to give! I suggest their songs to music lovers!

• James Blake, James Blake: James Blake is amazing! He is absolutely talented and his songs are the reflection of the good musician he is. His extraordinary taste in music makes him one of the best artists of 2011! As I said once, he is not easy to like but once you do, he turns to one of your favorite for sure.

• Kaiser Chiefs, The Future Is Medieval: Kaiser Chiefs are crazy and talented. Their innovation on this album was huge, influenced by their hiatus. They made a strong album, similar but also so different from their previous records. They are a reflection of these times and so is this record. They make Indie so proud!

•  The Vaccines, What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?: The Vaccines were discovered by accident but thankfully I did. The band is so interesting, so fresh. A mix of a beautiful indie and funky pop, I’m absolutely curious to follow their work and discover their next albums.

•  Michael Bublé, Christmas: Michael Bublé is one of my favorite singers. Sounding a lot like Mr. Sinatra, he made a special album related with Christmas and covered known songs like White Christmas or Jingle Bells very beautifully with his unique taste. I usually don’t like Christmas songs, but these jazzy versions are absolutely amazing. I totally suggest them!

•  Adele, 21: She is Adele. I shouldn't have much more to say. The album is amazing, full of strong vocals and followed by very well played instruments. 21 is something really special, there’s no one who can’t name a song from Adele. She is a growing artist who sold out Royal Albert Hall and that must mean something. I’ll be waiting for her return and new albums!

• The Doups, Small Town Gossip: The Doups were suggested to me. Their album is something we can’t usually see in Portugal, they are a very nice sound, a cute style and they are a promising band. They have this surely uncommon style and somehow alternative way of doing music. The Doups are different and that’s not something bad, actually they do take advantage of that so gracefully. I’m proud they are Portuguese!

Songs released this year:

There are loads of songs that I honestly loved this year like Maroon 5 - Moves Like Jagger, My Chemical Romance - Planetary (Go!), Lana Del Rey - Blue Jeans, James Blake - Limit To Your Love, Owl City - Kamikaze or even Márcia - Cabra-Cega or Luisa Sobral - Xico. Choosing an unique song is hard, specially when I found amazing Portuguese and international artists this year but I would chose as my favorite song Called Out In The Dark by Snow Patrol, there's some special aura around this song, sounds so positive, so "keep going" especially when he says "This is your life, this is your time"!

Musical Discovery:

I mentioned earlier this was a very rich year for me, musically speaking.

There’s a long list I could continue with but if I had to chose only one it would probably be Owl City. His work is amazing and his way of seeing the world is so simple, kind and beautiful.
His music reflects his believing in the purest feelings like true love or nature.

Albums That I’m waiting to be released:

Probably Keane and The Killers are the artists I’m most eager to listen to. They didn’t release anything this year and I’m absolutely curious to know their next work, to see how the sound of their next album is going to be. They make part of my favorite bands and not hearing from them – in terms of releasing music – for an entire year is somehow wired for me. I’m just curious! I’ve been following the news related with Keane’s new album and their sound is turning out so awesome and curious. I can’t wait!

I’m also waiting for Lana Del Rey’s predicted to be released next January and Willy Moon’s which is unknown. They are new talents that I’ve been following and I’m just anxious to discover more of their work.

Artists that began career in 2011 and I’m waiting to see more in 2012:

This is easy.  As I said above, Lana Del Rey and Willy Moon are two of the artists I’m waiting to know more about. They are new artists and I’m amazed by their talent and freshness. Their music is so different and new, so absolutely stunning and full of talent. I’m so curious to hear their albums and new works!

The Irish band confirmed their presence on the festival's first day, July 13.

Snow Patrol are the newest confirmation on the first day of Optimus Alive'12. The Irish band is going to perform on the first day, July 13, on the same day as Stone Roses and Justice.

With a new amazing record Fallen Empires, the band return to Portugal after their performance on Rock In Rio in 2010.

Called Out In The Dark is the new single taken from Snow Patrol's sixth album Fallen Empires.

Interview // With A Silent Film

We were really excited when the amazing British band A Silent Film, very known and respected in Portugal, accepted to give us an interview. Last week we received the answers full of an amazing humor and kindness, Robert Stevenson - singer and pianist for the band - answered some fan questions and this is the result.

Fuck Yeah Music Stories: We know you are from Oxford, how and when did you start in music?
A Silent Film: The band formed in 2005, we used to rehearse in a wooded shed at the bottom of an orchard in a house Spencer and I were renting just outside Oxford. We had a cat called Pebbles, fairy lights and hammocks in the trees, we had wild parties and there were always people hanging around, sleeping over in tents or cooking on the BBQ. It was a very soulful and creative place.

FYMS: As artists, which are your biggest dreams?
ASF: It's embarrassing to list them all but there are a few milestones that mean a lot to us personally like the approval of friends and family: sometimes they are the harshest critics and it hurts when they're right. I guess there a few more selfish dreams we have, like performing at the Royal Albert Hall in London or collaborating with artists we admire.

FYMS: Susana from Portugal asks “How’s the writing and recording of the new album going?”
ASF: Very well Susana, thank you. We've been hiding up in Arizona with mountain lions, snakes and cowboys. We've spent a long time on this album and it's going to be heavenly to play these songs out live for the first time.

FYMS: Amy from North Carolina emailed us “How has touring the US changed them?”
ASF: Amy, we were shocked how much touring the US changed us. We didn't have any crew or friends with us on our first major tour, we couldn't afford their flights and we didn't know anyone here so we simply hired a van and drove ourselves. It was one of the best experiences of my life so far, we drove through landscapes we had only read about, through thunder storms that were unimaginable and deserts that just went on for ever.

FYMS: Which are the artists that influence you the most?
ASF: There are too many to mention, we have an extremely broad taste throughout the band. Personally, right now I am listening to a mix of Bon Iver, John Grant and Bob Dylan.

FYMS: On the same basis as the last one, Lisa from Kansas City askes “who is the greatest drummer ever and why?” stating it wasn’t only for Spencer.
ASF: Spencer would say Roger Taylor from Queen and rightfully so! And also that guy on youtube, search for 'this drummer is at the wrong gig'.

FYMS: Your sonority is compared to bands like Keane, Coldplay and Snow Patrol. How do you feel to be compared with bands like those? Does it give you any encouragement in your career?
ASF: Sure, it's nice. I can hear parts of what we do in those bands but it's just the tip of the iceberg regarding where we see ourselves when we've been playing as long as those guys.

FYMS: Jane from Belgium emailed us a question. “Are you guys planning a European tour? If so when?”
ASF: Certainly Jane, as soon as the album is released in Europe we'll be making our way through Belgium. Will you take us out for waffles?

FYMS: We know you love Portugal. Which are the best things you remember from this country?
ASF: The wonderful fans and friends we made there last year. It's a beautiful country and we cannot wait to get back.

FYMS: Which is your favorite from your new record? And from “The City That Sleeps”? Is there any particular reason?
ASF: There's an old song called 'Anastasia' that's been kicking around for a while but we just nailed it for this record. Can't name a favourite off TCTS, we'll fall back in love with that record when we start playing live again next year.

FYMS: A Silent Film has some live experiences. Do you have any rituals before having a show?
ASF: Change your shoes and socks and clean your teeth. Hygiene is key to a good performance.

FYMS: Eric from Wisconsin tweet us this “If you could play a show anywhere in the world, where would it be?”
ASF: Beneath the Aurora Borealis, in the snow, somewhere cold. And obviously Wisconsin, Eric.

FYMS: With similar questions, two fans ask you “Which is the best experience from your US tour? And how has that changed you?”
ASF: We ended up doing a four day residency in Las Vegas, two shows a night on the casino floor. We were competing with the razz and dazzle of Vegas which made us raise our game. Definitely a unique series of shows.

FYMS: Which is the craziest thing that ever happened to you?
ASF: Winning in-studio performance of the year on Sirius XM in New York, runners up were Brandon Flowers and The Black Keys, two bands I truly admire.

FYMS: Once your album is released, which are the next steps to take?
ASF: Total non-stop touring and writing the third album.

FYMS: Amy from North Carolina sent us the sweetest email – telling us how she had met you, last April, on your Chapel Hill in NC show. She asks “Could Robert describe his lyric writing process?”
ASF: Hi Amy, I remember meeting you. My lyric writing process begins intensely personally. I love to tell stories in songs but I try never to write literally. I believe lyrics should be interpreted and felt, not always easily understood.

FYMS: If you didn’t belong to the music world, where would you imagine yourselves at?
ASF: I'm always drawn to creativity and expression, in Brooklyn some guys were playing out a scene from Shakespeare's Romeo Juliet on the subway. I'd like to think I would find a way to be creative no matter what life throws at us.

FYMS: Susana from Portugal asks “What are you thankful for?”
ASF: Every single person that ever picked up an ASF album or came to our shows.

FYMS: We know you have a great relationship with your fans. Which was the most awkward and the best moment you had?
ASF: I hate it when we come back to a city and cannot remember someone's name, on the other hand I get a real kick out of remembering someone's name.

FYMS: Complete these sentences...

ASF: ... we will write a song that will be played at either someones wedding or at someone's funeral.
b) The best thing people can say about me...
ASF: ... I'm punctual

News // The Killers, Jack White and Depeche Mode on U2 tribute album

20 years after the release of one of the most acclaimed U2 albums, 12 different artists join together to record a tribute album.

The Killers, Jack White, Snow Patrol and Depeche Mode are some of the known artists that are going to be part of this project untitled "AHK-toong BAY-bi Covered", that is going to be released on the next edition of the british Q Magazine.

The album has already the track list defined and which artists that are going to be part of it.

News // Snow Patrol release new album in 2011

Snow Patrol's sixth album "Fallen Empires" is going to be released on November 14, by Fiction Records.
The album recordings happened in Los Angeles with Garret "Jacknife" Lee.
Belonging to this album are the very successful singles Called Out In The Dark and the newest This Isn't Everything You Are.

With fourteen songs, Snow Patrol bet on the guitars - electronic and with distortions - drums reminding dance clubs and epic chorus. Fallen Empires was based on such brilliant albums like U2's Achtung Baby, LCD Soundsystem's The Sound of Silver and Arcade Fire's The Suburbs.
Otherwise this new experimental wave, Snow Patrol still sound like themselves.

Fallen Empires is a very strong successor of A Hundred Million Suns, released in 2008 and Up To Now, in 2009.
Several online magazines referee this new Snow Patrol album has their best album ever.

In September 4th, Snow Patrol released a sneak peak of their album releasing an EP under the name Called Out In The Dark - including the same titled single and Fallen Empires, My Brothers and I'm Ready.

The band also confirmed they already have their next album planned.

Snow Patrol, Shut Your Eyes

I started to enjoy Snow Patrol since 2008/09.
I like their soft rock style, their songs are very melodic, have a pretty interesting and beautiful image, and live they are a very productive and non-failure band which is good because there some bands that just screw up when they play live.
I'm not a HUGE fan of Snow Patrol, but they are one of the few bands that makes me want to follow their work, to see a live gig - that I missed last year - but i promised myself that after what I saw on tv I need to see them next time.
