Review: Festival Optimus Alive! 2013 - Day 1

Another great Optimus Alive edition ended... And FYMS went there to tell you everything!

With the help of some friends, this review is a personal reflection of each individuals (contributing to this same and the next two reviews of Optimus Alive'13) likes and dislikes of the performances each one was able to see at this festival and, of course, it may contribute to the wide contrast of opinions.

Stereophonics (06pm):

Nadia: “I didn’t saw much of the show but I really enjoyed their sound and enjoyed the little that I saw”

Deap Vally (06.45pm):

Patricia: "I went to see them just for curiosity but mostly, with a pre-created idea of their performance. It was good but it seemed more like an impersonation of some wild 80’s band than a modern rock girly band influenced by the 80's... Yet, it was a funny show to watch but it didn’t change any of my pre-created ideas. I always expect more from this kind of bands."

Two Door Cinema Club (08.25pm)
:

Patricia: "I saw Two Door Cinema Club, last year in Portugal around the same time… (Summer festivals - got to love!) but this year, they were even better. They brightened the main stage and they did their best, it was a really good show to watch not only for their mature and clear presence but also for their strongness and energy. They are always good to watch, leaving this heart-breaking feeling of seeing them again."

Nadia: “It was a pleasant experience, with good music and great energy. Definitely, something to repeat!”

Analex: "Two Door Cinema Club was a joyful experience. Earlier that day I decided to hear some songs of their new record in order to decide weather to see them or not. I liked it and decided to go. I could not have made a better decision! The show was super fun and even me that don't like to dance and don't know how to, ended up dancing! Definitely an experience to repeat and a band to follow."

Dead Combo (09pm):

Francisco F.: "This time, Dead Combo didn't come alone. With them, the drummer Alexandre Frazão joined them on stage, perfectly connected with the characteristic sound of this Portuguese band. 

There was time for western, cuba and a lot of blues. A perfect fusion of styles and a perfect connection between band and audience. Even though there weren't a lot of people seeing them, the band gave one of the best shows of the night and will remain in the minds of the people who saw them. Almost at the end, Tó Trips and Pedro Gonçalves surprised the public with an amazing cover of "Temptation" by the American singer Tom Waits. And when there's no Waits, there's these two vagrants to take us with them."

Green Day (09.55pm):

Patricia: "I created way too high expectations for them, probably for being such a vivid band with many years behind them.

Yet, I found it a bit disappointing. They had the energy, the setlist but they didn’t surprise. 

Well, the interesting factor was the way they connected and interacted with their audience for the entire show but something more spectacular was missing… After all, they are Green Day!"

Nadia: “Green Day was madness! Way better than what I saw at Pavilhão Atlântico (now known as MEO Arena) where they took us to a travel from the early Green Day to the new songs. To highlight the big contrasts from older people jumping to old songs and the youngest vibrating with the most recent hits."

Analex: "Unfortunately Green Day show was a disappointment to me. Some years ago I saw them live after the release of "21st Century Breakdown" and it was one of the best shows I went. But this year's show somehow it didn't has as much magic as that one. I didn't knew their new work so it could go in one of two ways: be surprised and get along with it, or being bored whenever they played something I didn't know. Unfortunately to me, it went the second way. Although Green Day keep being very enthusiastic with the public, maybe it's too much to say every two songs "hey oooh". In my opinion, not the best return after the release of 3 albums in just one year."

Green Day - headliner of Day 1

Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros (10.30pm):

Francisco F.: "Even though the main attraction were Green Day, on the secondary stage the party went on. Edward Sharpe debut in Portugal this year and brought with him the magnificent orchestra Magnetic Zeros. And we, surely, hope to receive them again after this great show.

Guitars, drums, bass, accordions, keyboards, metals and so on. Everything was able to be listen in this concert, where country, folk and pure classic rock shouted out loud. The audience delivered themselves to the rhythm and sweetness of this american band by dancing and dancing during the show.

And (Alex) Ebert - lead singer from the band - didn't stay behind. He mingled between the audience and even picked up someone's call. Pure generosity and simplicity in one show. 

One of the best surprises of the night."

Vampire Weekend (12am)
:

Patricia: "I am really suspicious but I really enjoy Vampire Weekend and I enjoy even more their shows. I saw them, for the first time, in 2010 – with two albums and not as famous as today. But on this Optimus Alive edition, the show was beautiful, catchy and full of energy since the very beginning and not even the new songs were able to break the spirit. Vampire Weekend are a band with attitude and the secondary stage – Stage Heineken – was too small for their show.

Next time… a chance on the main stage, please?"

Nadia: "Vampire Weekend had a cool sound but it didn’t conquer me."

Analex: "While waiting for my favorite song from Green Day, that never came (Time of Your Life - I have to admit it's not the best song for a festival) I lost my Vampire Weekend's favorite one (Step) - even though I barely know their work before their new album. I didn't enjoy their show as much as I should have, but I believe that happened due to how tired I was but was also due to the physical space. The number of people that wanted to see them was way bigger than what the Heineken stage tent could handle. Vampire Weekend deserved the main stage!"

Steve Aoki (01am):

Patricia: "I saw Steve Aoki two years ago at Optimus Alive on a smaller stage. For that reason, I was expecting something really big from one of the best producers of the last years and mostly I was eager to see what he would do on this (big) stage change.

And this year, on the main stage he was even better. He was able to make every single people in the audience (adults and teenagers) jump and dance with his music. Full of personality and doing is usual plays (caking people or using a rubber boat to jump into the crowd), he did a great job by putting every single (and really tired) person to jump as wildly and crazily as possible. Not only the lights were catchy but also his music choices were ideal to this night. Steve Aoki never disappoints."

Crystal Fighters (01.45am):

Francisco F.: "After a gigantic show at Paredes de Coura, last year, Crystal Fighters returned to Portugal but this time, a bit more south. As expected, only a few got indifferent to the upbeat rhythm of this band and the irreverent singer Sebastian Pringle. They were the surprise of the night and left an incredible joyful and party ambience. Surely, we all want to go to the beach with them."

Marky Ramone's Blitzkrieg with Andrew WK (03am):
Francisco F.: "After the harsh cancelation of Death From Above 1979, not even the entire Ramones would be enough to bring up the audience. At 2pm it was able to see many t-shirts of the mythic New York band but at 3am, not much was seen. It's fancy to like the Ramones and here's the proof. 
But let's go to what really matters. Marky joined the stage with his Blitzkrieg counting with Andrew WK to the vocals and, just two minutes after the beginning, the "traditional" mosh was on and the audience was ready to sing loudly the singles that changed the rock history forever.
And despite the magnificent reponse from the audience, this show seemed nothing but a band of Ramones covers playing in a little bar in Lisbon. Where is the rebellion attitude from the 70's? 
It wasn't on stage but thankfully it was with the audience that, even without the discouragement of the band, maintained faithful to what is expected from a punk show. 
It's sad to say that they didn't fulfill the spot reserved to Death From Above 1979 and they were one of the biggest disappointments of the night. But, at least, we went to bed with "Rockaway Beach" in our heads."

Two Door Cinema Club, Sleep Alone

Two Door Cinema Club are a young Irish who's sound is somewhere between indie and electropop. Formed in 2007 and they are now composed by Alex Trimble (vocals, guitar and synths), Sam Halliday (lead guitar and backing vocals) and Kevin Baird (bass guitar, synths and backing vocals). On live performances they also count with Benjamin Thompson (drums).

They are very known for remixing songs from different artists like Lady Gaga, Young The Giant or The Strokes.
They count with a released record Tourist History, on February 2010 and a second album is now set to be released next September 2012 under the name Beacon.

Beacon already has a single: Sleep Alone. Curiously, this incredible song had a different background approach. According to Alex Trimble, on an NME article, Sleep Alone was inspired while smoking cannabis to help his sleeping issues. To NME, he said: "I have a terrible time sleeping when I get off tour," he explained: "It's horrible. So I was smoking a little bit every night before I went to bed and it was really influencing what happened when I was asleep."

He concluded: "I ended up having these really crazy dreams. I started reading about dreams and got really interested in lucid dreaming when you have full control over your dreams – you realise you're dreaming, but within your dream it also feels like the real world. There's a little of that in the song, but I never achieved it."

Sudoeste TMN 2012 Comment: Two Door Cinema Club - some people told me they were a fascinating live band and I would really enjoy them. Gladly, what they told me was true. Two Door Cinema Club were electrifying, hypnotic. They have really exciting music and their energy reflects their talent and deep lyrics. I can't wait for their return and see them one more time.

Entrevista // Com Norton

A few months ago, we had this amazing interview with this incredibly talented band from Castelo Branco named Norton.
Created ten years ago, Norton are composed by composed by Rodolfo Matos, Pedro Afonso, Leonel Soares and Manuel Simões.

Remember their beautiful single Glowing Suite and the band on this post.
With a few albums released and celebrating their 10th anniversary, they gave us a cool interview, explaining not only thir stories, their writing process, their touring but also sharing some opinions and personal curiosities.

For several reasons, we are only publishing it today... But it's a fun interview that you shall read and enjoy.

FYMS: Acho que já é uma pergunta que devem fazer muitas vezes mas...porquê o nome Norton?
Norton: Não tem nenhum significado especial, escolhemos um nome que fosse lido da mesma forma em qualquer nacionalidade, qualquer língua. Norton não tem nenhum significado, é como se fosse dar um nome a um filho, ou a alguém especial, tanto que queiramos nomear...e nós decidimos Norton.
Queríamos um nome que não tivesse tradução. E a nível gráfico também é um nome bonito, também fomos por aí.

FYMS: Quais são as principais diferenças do vosso álbum anterior e deste?
Norton: O disco anterior, o "Kersche", primeiro é um disco que a base tem muito mais electrónica, na altura estávamos mais virados para música quase de laboratório, e fez sentido para nós, naquela altura. Este disco, optámos precisamente por inverter um bocadinho isso, pelo menos tornar o disco muito mais orgânico, partimos com aquele conceito básico do rock, do rock n' roll clássico, que é uma bateria, baixo, guitarra e vozes. Tornar a coisa muito mais orgânica. Mas era uma das limitações que o "Kersche" tinha era que ao vivo não conseguíamos sair muito dalí, e com este disco, sendo muito mais orgânico temos essa possibilidade, apesar de termos electrónica na mesma, mas isso faz parte da história da banda e da sua personalidade.
Quando o disco foi feito, era o disco perfeito, base de laboratório, na sala, no estúdio, e este disco foi um disco feito desde início a pensar no que poderiam vir a ser os concertos ao vivo.
Para além de tudo o que falámos, acho que a principal grande diferença era a voz do vocalista, que saiu...e o Pedro assumiu as vozes principais.
E o Manel foi formalizado. Foi o primeiro disco com o Manel, com a banda, apesar de nos outros discos ter sempre participado de alguma maneira.
Acho que neste disco crescemos imenso, até como músicos, porque a composição do disco foi feita numa sala de ensaios, tudo a tocar ao mesmo tempo, as músicas vão surgindo... não como o "Kersche" que foi uma coisa mais pensada, mais como o Pedro e o Rodolfo estavam a dizer, de laboratório.
Este disco, é um reflexo muito grande de uma coisa que nos marcou imenso, que foi a nossa primeira tour, pela Europa em 2009, que na altura nunca pensámos que nos fosse marcar tanto.
Eu acho que este disco é um reflexo total daquela semana e meia pela Europa que estivemos todos juntos, acima de tudo é um disco de união, daí o nome do disco "Layers of Love United".

FYMS: O álbum foi lançado o ano passado, qual é a sensação após um ano de lançamento desse álbum? Já percebi que foi completamente diferente dos outros, o que é que vocês sentem, relativamente ao disco?
Norton: Sentimos que queremos voltar a gravar um novo, porque temos cada vez mais vontade de fazer coisas novas novas não é?
Mas no fundo sentimos um grande orgulho deste disco, já fez um ano é certo. Lançámos agora um terceiro single, continuamos a rodá-lo, continuamos a tocar ao vivo...
Desde o início que sentimos que tinha muito para dar, tem imenso potencial.
Este disco também nos deu outra força para podermos encarar uma nova etapa, um novo disco, e acho que isso é muito importante.

FYMS: Pegando agora nessa história do novo single. Porque é que o video foi filmado em Nova Iorque? Qual a história por trás da letra?
Norton: Porquê em Nova Iorque...é muito simples, nós conhecemos o Bruno Simões, o realizador, à cerca de ano e meio. Ele está a fazer um documentário sobre uma editora portuguesa, que já acabou nos anos 90, que era a “Bee Keeper”. Da qual nós todos fizemos parte, com outras bandas, e que esteve na nossa formação na música. E o Bruno é uma pessoa de fora, não estava ligado à editora, era uma das pessoas que comprava os discos da editora, é realizador, e achou que fazia sentido fazer documentários.
Contactou-nos como contactou as outras bandas todas, e houve uma vontade em fazer um vídeo para os Norton. Ele foi viver para Nova Iorque e nós precisávamos de um vídeo.
Em relação à história da música, é a música - a nível de letra - mais retalhada do disco, foi feita precisamente por nós os três, ainda me lembro de nós andarmos a escrever a letra, e é uma mistura das nossas experiências sobre uma parte da letra depois fomos fazendo o resto à volta dela.
Seguir um bocadinho o mood da música, uma música mais intima, forte também, a letra tem frases chave fortes e que nos dizem muito respeito. Saíram das nossas cabeças.

FYMS: Como é que se sentem ao serem comparados com bandas como Two Door Cinema Club e The Foals?
Norton: É agradável! Já agora quem é que faz essas comparações?

FYMS: Pessoalmente quando vos ouvimos ficamos com essa ideia, mas quando andamos a investigar mais sobre vocês, vimos na internet muitas coisas desse género.
Norton: Sim, é óbvio que essas influências estão no disco, e passam por bandas que nós, na altura que estivemos a compor o disco, andávamos a ouvir bastante e acabas sempre por não te conseguir afastar disso, e das tuas influências.
Tem um bocado a ver com o teu gosto pessoal e era estranho se nós ouvíssemos essas bandas e soássemos outra coisa.
A verdade é que nós fazemos sempre um esforço. preferimos sempre, como o Henrique Amaro disse uma vez “somos influenciados mas não influenciáveis”, ou seja, notas as influências mas não é igual a nada, não é cópia de nada, consegues dizer quais os discos, secalhar, que nós andávamos a ouvir na altura, mas não é igual a nenhuma música de nenhuma dessas bandas, e acho que por um lado é positivo.

FYMS: Agora estava-me a lembrar que eu hoje estava a comentar com uma amiga minha que ia fazer uma entrevista e tinha-lhe dito que era aos Norton, e ela depois foi ouvir e disse “realmente, isto soou-me a Two Door Cinema Club." Mas realmente é curioso, que mesmo alguém que não está tão ligado à área da música faça essa ligação.
Norton: Sim, faz sentido! E acho que neste assunto da música, acima de tudo as pessoas não devem ser hipócritas. Portanto secalhar é mais importante nós percebermos a história disto da música, das influências...e acho que não há muito mais a inventar.
Acho que acima de tudo, hoje em dia, as bandas ou são boas ou são más, eu acho que as pessoas que gostam mesmo de música percebem isso nas bandas, que é, quando és genuíno ou não é...
Acima de tudo tens de fazer aquilo que te vem no coração. Isso não quer dizer que os Norton nunca vão cantar em português, em 10 anos nunca nos passou pela cabeça. com os Norton acho que não faz sentido, as bandas que gostamos são anglo-saxónicas. Gostamos de música portuguesa? Claro! Tem boas referências, mas não crescemos com elas, ou seja, a música que começámos a fazer já foi feita em inglês. Tem tudo a ver com atitude.
E acho que consegues perceber quando tens imensas bandas a imitar uma banda de à 10 anos atrás, parece que todos querem cantar da mesma maneira, todos tentam imitar aquela pessoa. Mas há coisas boas cantadas em português e nós somos os primeiros a admitir que é muito mais difícil escrever em português do que em inglês. Cada língua à sua maneira.

FYMS: Mas por outro lado, o português cá em Portugal é menos aceite, provavelmente o publico em geral cá, não vai achar tanta piada. Eu acho que o povo português ainda é muito preconceituoso com a própria língua e com a própria musica.
Norton: Mas ultimamente tem crescido, tem havido um “boom” de bandas boas e de outras que vão atrás do carreirinho. Tens muito poucas bandas novas, comparando com à 4 anos atrás, a cantar outra língua. Imensas bandas estão a surgir agora e a cantar em português e foi uma coisa que se perdeu, nos anos 90.

FYMS: Vocês são de Castelo Branco, vocês sentem sentem que foi mais difícil para vocês conseguirem vingar?
Norton: Ao principio foi, hoje em dia não, com a internet e assim. Nós começámos, à precisamente, 10 anos atrás com os Norton, era muito mais complicado, secalhar há coisas que por não estarmos cá perdemos. Há determinadas oportunidades que perdemos porque nos passa um bocado ao lado.

Por outro lado, em Castelo Branco, a cidade é mais pequena, podemos ir a pé para a sala de ensaios, estamos mais relaxados, mais descontraídos. Temos uma sala de ensaios, o que aqui em Lisboa é difícil de ter, tens de pagar uma sala, nós lá temos a nossa, 5 minutos e estamos todos na sala...Temos essa mais valia. Encontramo-nos com muita facilidade.

FYMS: Na vossa página do Youtube vocês têm várias versões de uma música dos Friendly Fires. Porquê Friendly Fires e porquê essa música?
Norton: Isso foi em Paris, foi no último concerto da tour, foi num domingo e eram 4 ou 5 bandas. Éramos para fechar a noite, mas como chegámos tarde - viemos de Luxemburgo - meteram-nos a tocar em primeiro, e nós fomos visitar a cidade, onde nunca tínhamos estado e fomos à torre Eiffel , à noite, e estávamos com as guitarras.
E o disco dos Friendly Fires foram dos discos mais ouvidos na carrinha e já tinhamos falado que era giro fazer isso, depois surgiu tudo lá.
A primeira vez que tocámos essa versão desse vídeo que está no Youtube,essa versão é uma estrofe e o refrão, tem 1 minuto e tal, e depois quando viemos para casa começámos a tocar a música em acústicos. E surgiu a oportunidade para a gravar para uma edição japonesa do disco, que saiu também o ano passado, decidimos ter uns temas extras, gravamos este tema e agora como reeditámos o disco em vinil decidimos pôr um tema extra também no disco, a versão dos Friendly Fires.

FYMS: O que é que se segue a seguir?
Norton: Seguem-se concertos durante o Verão e começar a compor o disco novo. Até ao final do ano ter um disco novo pronto para sair no principio do ano.

FYMS: O que é que sentem pela musica portuguesa hoje em dia?
Norton: Eu acho que está melhor que nunca. Há a música muito boa e há a música popular, há muita coisa, há muitas bandas.

FYMS: Podem dar exemplos dessa música “muito boa”?
Norton: Há bandas muito boas. Os X-Wife são das melhores bandas, tens Wraygunn, tens os Linda Martini, agora há uns miúdos aí que estão com o primeiro disco e são extremamente interessantes vão ter uma prova de fogo quando sair o segundo disco são os Nice Weather for Ducks, os Memória de Peixe, há imensas bandas. E depois, o acesso à música, tem sido muito maior agora, podes ouvir um disco novo de maneiras muito diferentes. E é bom, esse acesso que tens às bandas, porque existem concertos e as pessoas já têm uma referência.

FYMS: Sim, estas iniciativas da Fnac e da Optimus, são sempre boas descobertas.
Norton: E agora vai reabrir o Ritz Club, já tínhamos aqui em Lisboa o MusicBox, pronto o Lounge também faz umas coisas, o Optimus Discos faz também aqueles festivais, tem sido muito bom.

FYMS: As perguntas da praxe...

Norton: Um dia, vamos poder viver da música.
b) A melhor coisa que podem dizer sobre mim…
Norton: Somos uma boa banda.
Gostaram de ver um concerto, gostam das canções, gostam do disco...
O mesmo que as pessoas dizem do café do Starbucks: Caro mas bom.
c) E a pior…
Norton: Ser uma cópia de uma banda qualquer...A voz do vocalista é miserável. Lemos esse comment no Youtube...
O pior que podem dizer é “São os Norton Anti-virus”
d) Daqui a dez anos…
Norton: Daqui a 10 anos, vamos viver da música. Daqui a 10 anos, vamos continuar a tocar, rugosos, mas com as guitarras na mão, com o mesmo gosto que temos hoje em tocar. Daqui a 10 anos são mais 10 anos da banda.

FYMS: O que diria aos leitores do nosso site?
Norton: O que é que dizíamos...Vão comprar o disco, vão ouvir, o disco, os discos.
Nós fazemos 10 anos e entretanto vamos começar a oferecer coisas aos nossos fãs e a quem nos ouve. E as pessoas vão ter oportunidade de ter várias surpresas e isso inclui ouvir a nossa discografia, seja que formato for, mas vão poder conhecer melhor os Norton. Fuckyeah.

Norton, Glowing Suite

Norton are a indie pop Portuguese band created in 2002 and composed by Rodolfo Matos, Pedro Afonso, Leonel Soares and Manuel Simões.

With the sonority very similar to Two Door Cinema Club and Foals, Layers of Love United is the most recent work from the band, released in 2011 and a vinyl version freshly released.
Norton had previously released an album - Kersche in 2007 through the label Skud & Smarty Records.

Norton are really one of those exciting bands turning music into a real pleasure and this last Layers of Love United is one of those records that you won't get tired of. It's full, it's catchy, impressive and interesting without leaving the mystery and addictive sounds.

Composed by 9 songs - the record is a result of the band's evolution, union and creativity.

Glowing Suite is now the third single taken from Layers of Love United. The song it's a very personal and intense relationship story, the classic but timeless "boy-meets-girl" complemented by soft guitars and extreme keyboards, without mentioning the stunning vocals.

The video was recorded in New York in a short film format by Bruno Simões.
There's no quetion tthe video fits perfectly the song's spirit being involved on a urban scenario and a common story that veryone wishes to have someday.

News // Names added to Sudoeste TMN

The Portuguese radio station Radio Comercial has confirmed three names earlier this week.

James Morrison - who recently performed in Portugal - Ben Howard and Glen Hansard are the three confirmed names to Sudoeste TMN, on Zambujeira do Mar.

The first two are confirmed to play on August 2 while Hansard is confirmed for the following day.

News // New names on the Portuguese Festivals

Very interesting names have been added through the last days to the headlines of festivals that are going to happen mostly in this summer.

On Sudoeste TMN, besides the already confirmed David Guetta, they've confirmed the presence of the Irish Two Door Cinema Club (who've performed on Paredes de Coura, last year) on August 5.

The festival Sumol Summer Fest is going to happen on Ericeira, on June 29 and 30. Alpha Blondy and Gabriel, O Pensador are the newest adds to this festival dedicated to reggae.
The daily ticket is 40€ and the two-day pass is 50 € (doesn't include camping) and 65€ (with camping). The pass includes the "Welcome Party" on June 28 at night.

On June 29 Alpha Blondy and Gui Boratto are performing and on June 30 is Gabriel, O Pensador's turn.

The American Incubus were confirmed on Super Bock Super Rock, after a few days of suspense. The band is performing on July 5 alongside with Battles, Pete Doherty and Apparat.

On Optimus Alive, The Kooks are performing on the last day - July 15, on the same day as Radiohead, Metronomy, Mazzy Star, Caribou and the Portuguese PAUS.

On Rock In Rio, the Portuguese Orelha Negra are performing on Palco Sunset inviting Hyldon and Kassin on June 1. On the main stage, we can count with Lenny Kravitz, Maroon 5, Ivete Sangalo and Expensive Soul.

News // Two Door Cinema Club remix Lady Gaga

The band Two Door Cinema Club contributed to Lady Gaga's new remix album Born This Way: The Remix by mixing her song Electric Chapel.
