News // Festival MUSA Cascais 2013 | July 5th and 6th

After another successful edition, last year, the alternative MUSA Festival is back again on the next July 5th and 6th - in the year of its 15th anniversary.

Despite the involuntary changes, the 2013 edition of MUSA has a powerful lineup grabbing some of the biggest name of the Reggae roots.

On the first day, happening on July 5, the lineup counts with Tiken Jah Fakoly, Chronixx and Zinc Fence Band, Junior Kelly, Pás de Probléme, The Gypsies and Mundo Escuro.
On July 6, the performances will be responsibility of Max Romeo, Twinkle Brothers, Busy Signal, Artmata, The Bridge Under Water and Bang Bang Romance.

Besides the main stage, there are going to be the Heineken Stage sounds by Roots Dimension focusing on a soundsystem side and Bass Station Stage by Badmood more connected with dubstep, drum n' bass, trap and tropical bass.

To remind you that MUSA Festival is a sustainable festival, looking to promote a more conscious society for the global challenges, mixing music and creativity to spread the message: Do you care?
MUSA is happening, once again, near the Carcavelos beach - counts with camping (in and out of the festival) and easy access to public transportations. The CP created special trains dedicated to the event - around 4:30am the lines Cascais/Lisboa will be functioning for both directions, stoping in every station - in regard of what MUSA and Criativa defend and promote - a more sustainable world.

The tickets follow the premiss Culture is from all to all and following that the daily tickets are 12€, a two-day MUSA Cascais Pass costs 15€, a Camping MUSA Cascais (two days) costs 20€.

Entrevista // Com Jimmy P

As you might know we went to the festival MUSA Cascais. And we had the chance to interview some Portuguese and international artists from the most different genres but all very kind and friendly.

During the next days we are publishing the interview results, although we will keep the original language interviews. If there's any interest from you, we can translate from Portuguese to English or vice-versa.

Hello Atlantic - The Leaving Song

Hello Atlantic is a project by João Esteves and it is the result of his travelling.
His path began in 2007, in Finland. With 19 years old, João went to the opposite side of Europe. While he was in temporary bedrooms, having random meetings and waiting for a drive, João had the opportunity to write songs about everything he was experiencing.
The name Hello Atlantic brings back the days and memories of the place where João was born and grew up.

In 2012 he released his first album called Slob Of The Kitchen Sea (finished in Helsinki) supported by Optimus Discos.

João is now back in Portugal ready to tell his stories and experiences.

Hello Atlantic was the first band to step on the stage at Festival MUSA Cascais and it was a hell of a warm up for the rest of the night. His sweet voice and melodic songs made his performance a very good moment.

Etana - Free

Shauna McKenzie or more usually known as Etana started her carrer in 2006. Since then she has already released 2 albums.

From the beginning she was used to be the girl between the boys, since she was the only baby girl in a family of boys. In the reggae world she is one of the few female artists and is commonly called the reggae princess.

Her songs are related with love, fighting injustices and prejudices, having pride and so on.

Overall, my music has to uplift. It can’t just be that I go in a studio and string words together. My music must have a message, it must have a purpose. It has to make people feel good and want to really listen to what I’m saying.

Two years after initiating her carreer, Eatana released her first album called The Strong One  - that’s why she also named as The Strong One. All the tracks were released as a single and also charted. The Strong One featured songs such as Warrior Love, Jah Chariot, Don’t Forget, I Am Not Afraid, Blessing, More & More, Caltariba System as well as her first two hits Roots and Wrong Address.

Travelling to another country to perform is perhaps one of the most exciting things for me. Especially if it is a country where English isn’t the first language. Being in Portugal or Spain, for example and hearing a crowd of 100,000 people sing every one of your songs word for word is just exhilarating.

While touring, Etana won several awards such as Best New Artist, Female Vocalist of the Year, Reggae Singer of the Year, Most Admired Female Artist, Cultural Artist of the Year and several Album of Year trophies.

In 2011 she released her second album called Free Expressions. Before that she released Free, Happy Heart and August Town, letting the fans very excited to what was coming.

This time around, I got really involved in the making of the album. For The Strong One there were a team of writers but it’s pretty much all me and my pen in the majority of the songs on Free Expressions. That was an experience I enjoyed, and I am definitely more into writing these days.

Last weekend, FYMS had the enormous opportunity not only to go to her gig at Festival MUSA Cascais but also to get to know Etana and have a very pleasant conversation. She is what you can see when she is singing live, a very relaxed person, always smiling even after such a exhausted show.
She started her show with this song:

Jimmy P - O regresso

Joel Plácido known in the Rap world as Jimmy P, was born in 1983, in Setúbal.
With 8 years old he started to write poems and with 15 he started to try to rap. Between the 8 and 17 years old, while in France, he found out what Rap really means and formed his first group.

Ten years later, he is a reference of the portuguese Rap, becoming one of the most respected and recognized artists. In his songs he reflects about various themes and the songs are all musically different. Don’t expect always the same from him. He is definitely different.

By the end of this year, in November, Jimmy will release his album A Caminho da Lua (on the way to the moon) which counts with the collaborations of some very well-known Portuguese artists, such as Valete.

FYMS had the opportunity to see Jimmy live at Festival MUSA Cascais and we were open-mouthed. Jimmy and his band are all full of energy up in the stage. And his voice and lyrics are nothing but fantastic. Besides that, he is incredibly nice.

Interview - Festival MUSA Cascais

A couple of weeks ago, we talked with one of the people responsible for the organization of Festival MUSA Cascais, Gustavo Sousa. He explained the concept, the goals and other important things related to the organization of this mega event.
The slogan of this festival is: Preocupas-te? - which means: "Do you care?"

Na passada sexta feira, estivemos à conversa com o Pedro Guilherme, na sede da Criativa. O Pedro é o presidente da associação responsável pela organização do Festival MUSA Cascais.
Em conversa explicou-nos como tudo começou, a ideia inicial, as dificuldades e obstáculos com que todos os anos se deparam. Uma coisa foi notória a motivação que o move a ele e à restante equipa é maior que qualquer possível obstáculo.
