The Portuguese singer Aurea is going to release her second record next November 26.
Her new work is going to be named Soul Notes and it was inspired by soul music.
The presentation single is Scratch My Back which was released on a Portuguese radio station - Rádio Comercial - the same day that Aurea celebrated her 25th anniversary.
This beautiful and talented singer names has her inspirations artists like Aretha Franklin and Amy Winehouse to John Mayer and James Morrison.

Aurea released her self-titled album in 2010, releasing as single huge hits like Busy (For Me), Okay Alright and The Only Thing That I Wanted.

As you might know we went to the festival MUSA Cascais. And we had the chance to interview some Portuguese and international artists from the most different genres but all very kind and friendly.

Joel Plácido known in the Rap world as Jimmy P, was born in 1983, in Setúbal.
With 8 years old he started to write poems and with 15 he started to try to rap. Between the 8 and 17 years old, while in France, he found out what Rap really means and formed his first group.
Ten years later, he is a reference of the portuguese Rap, becoming one of the most respected and recognized artists. In his songs he reflects about various themes and the songs are all musically different. Don’t expect always the same from him. He is definitely different.
By the end of this year, in November, Jimmy will release his album A Caminho da Lua (on the way to the moon) which counts with the collaborations of some very well-known Portuguese artists, such as Valete.
FYMS had the opportunity to see Jimmy live at Festival MUSA Cascais and we were open-mouthed. Jimmy and his band are all full of energy up in the stage. And his voice and lyrics are nothing but fantastic. Besides that, he is incredibly nice.

Musket is a young Portuguese band, based in Lisbon, composed by three boys: Ricardo (drums), Tomás (bass) and Miguel (guitars), the last two are the singers, changing between songs.
Initially Miguel and Ricardo practised on a small garage but soon Tomás came up and they had to move to a proper rehearsal room, in 2008.
Only two years after they found the perfect four songs to be recorded and that would be included on their first EP - Musket EP, released in early 2011.
According with the band, their creative writing comes from improvise and freely, none of them brings anything from home, they just join together on the rehearsal room and "goes with the flow" until they find something they think it's worth their time and might be used for some song.
But like everything, there are exceptions. So Tired their first single was thought and partly created at home by Miguel and Tomás, during last Summer. For being so different, so peculiar and so promising this song was chosen to be their presentation single, creating a bridge between their EP and their first record, predicted to be released somewhere in next year. So Tired was a collaboration between Musket and Corvo Records, masterized by Henrique Albuquerque and Rui Pereira. The artwork was ccreated by Núria Murilhas.
Richie Campbell is a reggae artist, who's career started in 2004, with Stepacide but got recognized on his solo career.
Richie Campbell is a combination of his name Ricardo and Campbell which is a tribute to two of his favorite artists - Turbulence (Sheldon Campbell) and Admiral T (Chrissy Campbell).
Influenced by Marvin Gaye, Ottis Redding and Bob Marley, he mixes reggae, soul and dance.
With 23 years old, Richie is one of the most successful reggae artists in Portugal and who already work with Kynami Marley and Jason Farmer and also made the first part of Nas & Damien Marley on their performance in Lisbon. A few weeks ago he performed with Alborosie on Campo Pequeno.
In 2008, he was the first Portuguese to achieve the Soundquake top.
In 2010 he released My Path (you can download it for free here), an album with 18 tracks including a participation of Kynami Marley on 911.
Everytime I Cry appears on his debut album My Path.
Do you know them?
Me neither until today when I heard that The Eleanors are going to work in London with the Coldplay'sproducer, Ken Nelson.
They are Miguel Rizzo, Hugo Marques, Tiago Barrigana and Manuel Ferreira. A group of boys, originally from Porto, PORTUGAL.
They describe their songs as rock, dancing, joy and passion and add "We are sure you will sing them later".
The band started in 2009 when their EP - Black to lies and Tv Shows - was recorded by Marc Requillé.
Márcia Santos, or just Márcia, is a Portuguese artist from Lisbon.
Inspired by her older brother, she always tried to imitate him starting to play organ and later discovering the guitar, receiving her first guitar - around her 13 years after convincing her father to give her one - that she describes as "(...) terrible. It was so bad that I had to play with my ear neat the guitar box to hear the sound."
She has a graduation in Painting, taken in the Lisbon's Fine Arts University, probably due to her father's profession - he was also a painter. Márcia is usually compared to female artists like Carla Bruni or Adriana Calcanhotto because just like them, she goes to stage only with her voice and her guitar, being very uncommon in Portugal - not only for being a woman but for doing it solo.
She started to write in Portuguese, during her Erasmus trip in France where she felt alone and discovered how unique her mother language was, until then she only wrote in English.
Dá is released in 2010, a year after Márcia's self-titled EP release through Optimus Discos and mentioned as Fnac's "New Talent 2009".
This record is incredibly easy to listen. She plays a lot with the words and the arrangements have touches of acoustic and soft-rock.
From Dá we can recognize Cabra Cega, Pra Quem Quer or A Pele Que Há Em Mim
This record is going to be released this year, counting with a version of A Pele Que Há Em Mim with the Portuguese artist JP Simões.

The Portuguese most traditional music genre - the Fado - was added today to UNESCO’s list of World’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. These intangible heritages includes traditions and skills passed within cultures.
As said a few weeks ago by me on a post: Fado is a music genre traditional and original from Portugal. In this type of music the Portuguese guitar is very used and the songs and lyrics are fatalistic. Amália Rodrigues, Carlos do Carmo, Mariza, Mafalda Arnauth, and Cristina Branco are amongst the most famous individuals associated with this genre.
Fado songs are usually performed by a solo singer accompanied by an acoustic guitar and the Portuguese guitar (a twelve wire string guitar).
The request was submitted on July 2010 and it was an initiative of Portuguese Parliament.
The committee that took this decision was chaired by the Ambassador of Indonesia to UNESCO, Aman Wirakartakusumah, and consisted of 24 countries, including Spain, Kenya, Japan and Venezuela.
Mariza, one of the most known comtemporary Fado singers, and the ambassador of Fado’s UNESCO candidacy said that should Fado be honored “perhaps we Portuguese may take greater pride in who we are, especially in the so very grey times we currently live in.” - it's actually true. Because I feel that everyone is now proud of something that is ours. Maybe we are not that bad we just need to focus on what we are good at.
Recently, the Fado Museum was created in Lisbon to preserve Fado’s heritage.
More than a different type of music it's a portuguese symbol and part of our identity.

Today I'm going to share a well known Portuguese band called Deolinda.
Almost everyone in Portugal know them so mainly this post is for our non-portuguese readers.
Deolinda are a Portugese band founded in 2006 by 4 musicians with different different musical experiences. Ana Bacalhau is the lead singer and one of the best portuguese singers. The band's name is also a fictional 40 year-old older, childless woman who observes her neighborhood from her window.
The band's style is very familiar with fado* but it has some differences from that traditional Portuguese music genre. The lyrics are not serious and they usually use humor, irony and a fast rithm.
They've alread released two albums and their second one Dois Selos e Um Carimbo (Two Stamps and a Seal), released in April 2010, hit the Portuguese charts at #1. The other album was released in 2008 and it's called Canção ao Lado.

Aurea is this new and young portuguese talent.
The girl that went to University to study performing Arts soon discovered that music was her thing (and thankfully!). Her biggest influences are Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, John Mayer and James Morrison.
She grew up listening to Elvis Presley and in 2010 she was invited to record a version of his hit song "Love Me Tender" which they had Elvis' voice for a virtual duet. She got really excited even if she wasn't one of those crazy Elvis fans. She was really proud when someone told her she was approved but the own Presley's family and the version was included on "Viva Elvis the Album".
I went to see her show last night and it was freaking amazing!
She has this powerful and touching voice. She is one of the most kind and respectful artists I've seen lately, not speaking that she is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous and pretty simple.
And on yesterday's show she sang Prince and Eddie Floyd, OMG! I got so but so excited, she sang so damn well!!!
Luísa Sobral, aos 15 anos, conquistou o juri dos Idolos, ficando nos primeiros lugares do concurso. Aos 19 anos começou a estudar na Berklee College of Music depois de acabar o curso em Boston, foi viver para Nova Iorque. Tocou em bares e festivais, onde ganhou experiência e se conheceu enquanto artista.
Hoje, com 23 anos lança o primeiro album. Not There Yet é o primeiro single do álbum e já conta com um videoclip.
PP – Not There Yet é o single de avanço. O que motivou esta escolha?
LS – Not There Yet é uma das últimas músicas que escrevi para o álbum. Começou a aparecer no piano, evoluindo posteriormente. É uma das minhas músicas mais Pop e, por isso mesmo, por ser um registo ao qual as pessoas estão mais habituadas, optei por seguir esse caminho. The Cherry on My Cake, é um album cujos temas são todos da sua autoria com a excepção de uma versão de um tema de Rui Veloso. Tem apenas três músicas em português, sendo as restantes em inglês, isto porque admite todas as referências que tem são de artistas americanos, que por sua vez interpretam na sua língua, a língua inglesa. É uma mistura entre Jazz e Pop.

A portuguese artist, he played at Plaza, Turbo Junkie and Grace. In 2007, he records and publishes his first solo album "Disco de Cabeceira".
In 2009, he is invited to join the portuguese well-known and huge success Amália Hoje, a project created to celebrate Amália and her songs.
From, Vila do Conde, this man sings and plays the guitar.
This year he published his single named "Um Amor Alheio".
This song reminds me my summer afternoons with my best friend and my grandmother neighbours around my age, all together singing, playing games, being stupid but most of all being wild and ourselves.
This song describes part of my childhood, part of myself.

I was already beginning a new post when my cousin Diana told me about this new indie rock band named The Doups.
Don't know much about them (after a search that's what i got!)
They are a indie rock band created in 2007, from Setubal. The band consists of João Rodrigues (vocals + rhythm guitar), Nuno Cunha (lead guitar + backing vocals), Gustavo Andrade (bass guitar) and André Rosa (drums + percussion). In 2009 they began their most busy year so far. After winning a regional garage band, they recorded a mini album in London with Producer Harvey Birrell. While mixing the album, they participated on the Supajam "Fast track to Heineken FIB" with more then 900 other bands and over 1600 tracks. The Doups got surprised when they get into the Top 40 and than Top 5 finalists. Made a show with the other bands that were competing. The band was rewarded with free passes for the 2009 Benicassim Festival with everything taken care of. After the concert in London, they made a small and promotional FNAC tour in Portugal and also played in The Rockone Festival, supporting the Offspring. Their selected track "Try Lie Die Whatever" was released on iTunes and by the end of that year they supported Franz Ferdinand, on their portuguese gig at Campo Pequeno, Lisbon. Nowadays they are still unsigned, but with some north american shows already booked.
I got really interested on these guys, they seem pretty cool and talented! I really enjoyed them.
The Gift, an amazing portuguese band, from Alcobaça in 1994, with awesome music not speaking about the genious Nuno Gonçalves, the great voice of Sónia Tavares, pianist/bass John Gonçalves and guitar/bass Miguel Ribeiro.
This guys are a band full of good energy, good music and portuguese proud!
This year they gave the opportunity for their fans to give whatever they want for their new album. A very good idea that i didn't participate on time. Must wait for their album to come out. According to the musics i've already listened to this album is going to be EXPLOSIVE!
I wanted to share with you this marvelous song by Toranja, a great portuguese band with huge and intelligent songs.
Laços is very strong, everytime i am a little bit down I remember this song. It reminds me of a broken relationship, and the guy wants the girl to "give" what she took from him, saying that they are doing the same thing round and round and they don't solve their life.
Strong and a pretty lyrical and theatrical in some way.
Toranja are absolutely one of my favorite portuguese bands I know, their level is huge, their sonority it's gorgeous!
