Sumol Summer Fest: Tove Lo actua a 3 de Julho

A artista sueca Tove Lo é a mais recente confirmação do festival Sumol Summer Fest.

Tove Lo é conhecida pelos seus hits Habits e Not On Drugs, ambos fazem parte do seu disco de estreia Queen of the Clouds, um disco que o FYMS definiu como "pensado ao pormenor" e "um disco agradável mas incrivelmente negro - revela-se uma boa companhia pelas batidas bonitas e instrumentais bonitos e energéticos, mas quando analisado ao pormenor, é um disco que realmente nos faz (re)viver a intensidade desses momentos".

Esta edição do Sumol Summer Fest acontece nos dias 3 a 4 de Julho, na Ericeira, e conta com um cartaz já confirmado de grandes nomes da música reggae e mais alternativa como Richie Campbell, Rudimental, Buraka Som Sistema e The Cat Empire.

Dividindo-se por dois palcos: Palco Sumol, com nomes mais sonantes, e Soundset Ribeira d'Ilhas com nomes mais alternativos e electrónicos, o Sumol Summer fest tem-se firmado no panorama de festivais de verão pela sua oferta direccionada para a música reggae e alternativa, reforçado pelo seu mote "o festival onde o Verão, a Praia, os Amigos e a boa Música se juntam!"

Os bilhetes já estão à venda, o bilhete diário a 40€ e o passe de dois dias com camping está com um preço promocional de 65€, apenas até ao dia 31 de Março.

Bob Marley is considered to be the King of reggae music.
Born in Jamaica, his career started around 1962.

Bob Marley continues to be the most remarkable reggae icon and also associated with the spread of Rastafari movement and Jamaican reggae.

With 13 studio albums, four live albums and eleven compilations Bob Marley's work was full of energy, political messages and live experiences.

Is This Love? is a song taken from his 1978 album named Kaya, becoming one of his best known hits.
It talks about devotion and love, it describes the willing and desire to be happy and together with the loved person besides mentioning how good it is to have a relationship with someone and share the word "love" with that person.
It's a powerful hit and really suits to all the romantic minds.
The video for this song features the supermodel Naomi Campbell, by the age of 7.

This song was also covered by different artists like Rihanna, James Blunt or Adam Lambert.

Bruno Mars, Locked Out Of Heaven

Bruno Mars is the artistic name of the American singer-songwriter Peter Géne Hernández.

Being surrounded by musicians his entire life, it wasn't a surprise to see him follow his family steps.
After an unsuccessful link with Motown Records, he signed with Atlantic Records in 2009 - where he was able to become recognised not only as a songwriter but also as a singer after singing and co-writing the hit songs Nothin' On You by B.O.B. and Billionaire by Travie McCoy.

His first record Doo-Wops & Hooligans was released in 2010, we wrote a review that can be seen here, was successfully acclaimed by critics and had has main singles songs like Just The Way You Are and Grenade.
He also counts with an EP It's Better If You Don't Understand, in 2010.

Bruno Mars is also responsible for hit songs like It Will Rain, Marry Me or The Lazy Song.

The also Grammy winner has recently released his second very expected studio album on December 11, 2012 under the name Unorthodox Jukebox.

The lead single Locked Out Of Heaven is a very interesting reggae funky and new spirited song by this young man.
Besides the instant resembles with The Police, Michael Jackson and even Dire Straits, I would  really accentuate on The Police's sound which is notorious during the quick up-beated rhythms.
This funky jive, easy-going song about a certain girl and what he feels about her really got into my most favourite singles of this year. The video is really elemantary but serving the purpose of the song - easy to listen, catchy and with a lot of groove, something really vintage like it was recorded on VHS videotapes.

All the energy, all the mystery around Locked Out Of Heaven brings the song to a new level of joyfulness.

No Doubt, Settle Down

No Doubt are an alternative rock band formed in California, around 1987 starting their work as a cover band for the English Madness.
The band members are Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Adrian Young and Tom Dumont.

They released six albums: No Doubt in 1992, The Beacon Street Collection in 1994, Tragic Kingdom in 1995, Return of Saturn in 2000, Rock Steady in 2001 and the freshly record Push and Shove on last September 21, 2012.

No Doubt's success started after the release of Tragic Kingdom - where songs like Don't Speak and Sunday Morning were taken from.
This particular record had most of its lyrics based on the end of Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal's love relationship.
The band is also known for hit songs like Rock Steady, Hey Baby and It's My Life.

They had a four-year hiatus, time that each member dedicated to side projects.

In 2009, No Doubt announced a world tour with different bands like Paramore, The Sounds, Janelle Monáe and Panic! at the Disco and revealed a new upcoming record for 2010.

On June 11, 2012 they announced that the new album would be out on September 25.
Settle Down is the first single taken from Push and Shove. The lyrics has a very positive attitude very influenced by reggae music and seems to be about a girl's adjustment to life and desire to make commitments. It's a really relaxed and easy-going song, perfect to enjoy with friends.
The video was directed by Sophie Muller and its quite interesting.

Entrevista // Com Chapa Dux

Continuing the festival MUSA Cascais interview marathon, see our previous interviews with Viralata,  Jimmy P and The Hypers.

Chapa Dux are a Portuguese band from Sintra and their music is a mix of Reggae, Ska and Dub. The band won Rock Rendez worten Awards 2011 and due to that they had the opportunity to play at South by Southwest, in Austin - Texas, this year.

Their message is clear and based on society's problems and the sonority represents the origins of all members, that goes from pop to jazz, passing through classical music.

Etana - Free

Shauna McKenzie or more usually known as Etana started her carrer in 2006. Since then she has already released 2 albums.

From the beginning she was used to be the girl between the boys, since she was the only baby girl in a family of boys. In the reggae world she is one of the few female artists and is commonly called the reggae princess.

Her songs are related with love, fighting injustices and prejudices, having pride and so on.

Overall, my music has to uplift. It can’t just be that I go in a studio and string words together. My music must have a message, it must have a purpose. It has to make people feel good and want to really listen to what I’m saying.

Two years after initiating her carreer, Eatana released her first album called The Strong One  - that’s why she also named as The Strong One. All the tracks were released as a single and also charted. The Strong One featured songs such as Warrior Love, Jah Chariot, Don’t Forget, I Am Not Afraid, Blessing, More & More, Caltariba System as well as her first two hits Roots and Wrong Address.

Travelling to another country to perform is perhaps one of the most exciting things for me. Especially if it is a country where English isn’t the first language. Being in Portugal or Spain, for example and hearing a crowd of 100,000 people sing every one of your songs word for word is just exhilarating.

While touring, Etana won several awards such as Best New Artist, Female Vocalist of the Year, Reggae Singer of the Year, Most Admired Female Artist, Cultural Artist of the Year and several Album of Year trophies.

In 2011 she released her second album called Free Expressions. Before that she released Free, Happy Heart and August Town, letting the fans very excited to what was coming.

This time around, I got really involved in the making of the album. For The Strong One there were a team of writers but it’s pretty much all me and my pen in the majority of the songs on Free Expressions. That was an experience I enjoyed, and I am definitely more into writing these days.

Last weekend, FYMS had the enormous opportunity not only to go to her gig at Festival MUSA Cascais but also to get to know Etana and have a very pleasant conversation. She is what you can see when she is singing live, a very relaxed person, always smiling even after such a exhausted show.
She started her show with this song:

News // First edition of Lisboa Jamaican Day

Now that Reggae is finally receiving the deserved attention in Portugal being part of very important and different festivals like Sumol Summer Fest, Reggae stage on Festival Sudoeste, the Festival MUSA Cascais, a new idea is given to this genre.

So an event is being launched in the Portuguese capital.
Lisboa Jamaican Day is going to celebrate the Jamaican culture, history and music with music performances besides expositions, street markets, movies and a lot of workshops (the predictions will include Dance - dancehall, history of reggae, history of the Rastafari culture, percussion and history of soundsystems.)

For ten hours, from 2pm to 12am on July 21 the idea is to create the environment and celebration that you feel on the known Jamaican street parties.

The confirmed artists, for this event, are Faya Fex, Mystic Fyah, Selecta Matata, Jah Version, Roots Dimension & Guests, Concrete Jungle, Big Up, One Sun and Big Badda Boom and they will perform for 60 minutes each during this special day.

For this day, and specially for Jamaican and reggae lovers and to Rastafari followers, you can expect a very diverse day, full of culture, music, expositions and you can embrace new experiences.

Remember next July 21, starting at 2pm, on Cais do Sodré a full day dedicated to reggae.

Interview - Festival MUSA Cascais

A couple of weeks ago, we talked with one of the people responsible for the organization of Festival MUSA Cascais, Gustavo Sousa. He explained the concept, the goals and other important things related to the organization of this mega event.
The slogan of this festival is: Preocupas-te? - which means: "Do you care?"

themed week // Stevie Wonder, Master Blaster

Born Stevland Hardaway Morris, Stevie Wonder is a 62-year-old musician and singer-songwriter.

He was a child prodigy and became one of the most important music figures of the late 20th century.

Known for songs like I Just Called To Say I Love You, Superstition and I Wish, Stevie Wonder has released 23 studio albums, four live albums, ten compilations and four live albums.

Master Blaster (Jammin') was released on September 12, 1980. The song was released on Hotter than July, released in the same year.
This song has a very reggae feeling and it's an ode to the reggae legend Bob Marley. Wonder performed this song live with Marley a few times on his US tour, during that year.
Master Blaster (Jammin') stayed at number #1 on the Billboard R&B charts for seven weeks.
Some critics say the Marley's song Jammin' inspired this songs title.

Richie Campbell, That's How We Roll

The Portuguese reggae artist Richie Campbell is working on his second album, after the success of My Path, released in 2010.

The first single of his new work is now available for purchase on iTunes and Richie has also shared a video to join this beautiful song.
That's How We Roll video was recorded in Kingston, Jamaica, on two of the most problematic neighborhoods - Creek and Tivoli Gardens. The video was produced by Philip "Jr Blender" Meckseper, directed by Salvador Colaço and edited by Endless Youth.

According to the reggae artist "We chose to record in Jamaica and in these two neighborhoods specifically to show there's something that goes beyond distance, nationality, color and social status. The values. We easily judge who, for not having the same easiness that we do, chooses the wrong way for survival. What we want to show with the music and the video is that in any part of the world, of Portugal, to one of the most dangerous cities of the world we can find people with one common goal, be and make everything to a better world and a better society."

Following this explanation we can understand why the song's title is sang by so many different people with different backgrounds, lifes, jobs and goals.

About the new record, Campbell revealed to Myway "it will be sort of the same style as My Path, maybe with more soul influences and more mature and consistent as the other one".

News // Musa Cascais Festival - new confirmation

Musa Cascais Festival is happening on June 22 and 23 on Praia de Carcavelos.

After confirming two big international Reggae names Turbulence and Protoje, the organisation has confirmed the presence of the Jamaican Etana.

With two released albums, in 2008 'The Strong One' and 2011 'Free Expressions', Etana is performing in Portugal for the first time.

Remember this festivals ticket prices are 1 day: 10 €, two-day pass: 12€ and two-day pass (including camping): 17€ and will count with other stages full of surprises and activities.

News // Festival Musa Cascais - Information

The Portuguese Festival Musa Cascais 2012 is happening on June 22 and 23 on Praia de Carcavelos, also very known being a surfing spot.

This festival is a unique and independent event, without any profits and volunteer, already being a world reference in terms of sustainability connected with music.

Besides the privileged view, Musa Cascais will count with camping - only on the two-day pass.
The price tickets are 1 day: 10 €, two-day pass: 12€ and two-day pass (including camping): 17€.

This year's edition already counts with two big and strong names from international Reggae: Turbulence and Protoje.
Two other stages will be launched by Roots Dimension and Badmood and will promote national reggae and dub artists.
There's also another place dedicated on the promotion and revelation of new bands in the beginning of their career. Until May 8, the organisation is revealing he chosen bands to be included on this festival.

Festival Musa Cascais 2012's main objective is to inspire a sustainable lifestyle, adding music and creativity on a fullfilling experience.

News // Announced artists on Sumol Summer Fest 2012

The festival that is going to happen in Ericeira between June 29 and 30 has recently announce more names.

Barrington Levy, Selah Sue and Ponto de Equilíbrio are the newest confirmation on the Portuguese festival mostly dedicated to Reggae.

The tickets for Sumol Summer Fest 2012 will cost 40€ a daily ticket, 50€ a two-day pass without camping and 65€ a two-day pass including camping (also the night of June 28).

The announced artists are:

Richie Campbell, Everytime I Cry

Richie Campbell is a reggae artist, who's career started in 2004, with Stepacide but got recognized on his solo career.

Richie Campbell is a combination of his name Ricardo and Campbell which is a tribute to two of his favorite artists - Turbulence (Sheldon Campbell) and Admiral T (Chrissy Campbell).

Influenced by Marvin Gaye, Ottis Redding and Bob Marley, he mixes reggae, soul and dance.
With 23 years old, Richie is one of the most successful reggae artists in Portugal and who already work with Kynami Marley and Jason Farmer and also made the first part of Nas & Damien Marley on their performance in Lisbon. A few weeks ago he performed with Alborosie on Campo Pequeno.

In 2008, he was the first Portuguese to achieve the Soundquake top.
In 2010 he released My Path (you can download it for free here), an album with 18 tracks including a participation of Kynami Marley on 911.

Everytime I Cry appears on his debut album My Path.

Jahcoustix - True to yourself

Jahcoustix, borned Dominik Haas in Bonn, Germany, is a reggae musician.
As a son of a German diplomat he traveled a lot. He lived in Mexico, Liberia, New York, Kenya and Egypt until 1988, when he moved back to Germany where he started to play with some friends a mixture of reaggae and jazz.

Since 2001 he was the background singer of Neighbourhood, he also played his own songs with this band. In March 2009 they and now he's working by himself.

Through his carreer he was opening act on several bands: UB40, India.Arie, Gentleman, Patrice, etc.

It all started in east Africa, in Nairobi, Kenya in 1992 where Jahcoustix found the music that would give his life a clear musical direction: Reggae. Spending most of his youth days in African countries, Jahcoustix was fascinated by the African people and their positive attitude towards life thus living in severe poverty. With a promising symbiosis of Roots and acoustic Reggae it is his aim to spread positive vibes and his music to people all over the world.

SuperHeavy, Miracle Worker

SuperHeavy is a project composed by Mick Jagger - lead singer from The Rolling Stones, Eurythmics' guitarist Dave Stewart, reggae's son Damien Marley, indian success A.R. Rahman and the beautiful jazz soul Joss Stone.

The project was inicially to promote Nokia's new platform, for their smartphones, but they might found this opportunity too good to waste. Later, Jagger and Stewart invited the very known indian musician A. R. Rahman to join the project.
Things failed between Nokia but the project was still on and was taken very seriously when the band began to work on their self-titled album in 2009, when Jagger, Stewart, Stone, Marley and Rahman went to studio in Los Angeles to "write songs which had meaning", said Mick Jagger later.
Super Heavy recorded 35 hours of music, some with a minute and a half, before the chosen list. The band worked 29 songs in ten days, but the album will only have 12 songs.
The debut was reviewed in Jim Henson Studio, Los Angeles on June 30 2011 and will be released on September 20, 2011.
"Miracle Worker" is the first single released on August 9.

Review: Bruno Mars "Doo-Wops & Hooligans" (2010)

Yeah, we all know his melodic voice from songs like I Wanna Be A Billionaire and Just The Way You Are. He is better and bigger than that.
His debut album Doo-Wops & Hooligans released last year is something fresh to the music world although the numerous clichés and contradictions he uses along the album.
Mars once said "If you know my story, you know I love all different genres of music". Now it's clear the widely different artists he likes such as The Police, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles and more recent artists like Jessie J and Jack White.
Generally Bruno Mars' songs are described as "'feel-good', carefree and optimistic, however, darker subjects are addressed in songs like Grenade, Liquor Store Blues and Talking To The Moon, which detail failed relationships and self-destructive behavior."
His voice is extremely soft thanks to his fantastic capacity for using falsetto making his voice much more versatile.

"Grenade" (3:40) (as far as many others on the album) talks about love, an unconditional love that is not received back. The girl has broke his heart, although he would give everything to her without any questions. Resume? He loves her so much he would die for her, but she wouldn't do the same. This song sounds a little bit reckless and dangerous, all the idea of sacrificing his life is very strong although the romantic side of it.

Bruno Mars left a message on the official video released by his label WMG.

"The song is about loving someone so deeply, and the pain of knowing that the person you love does not feel the same. The actions in this video serve as a metaphor, and should not be taken literally. I am aware of the power of visual media, and I encourage everyone who watches this video to understand that it is an artistic interpretation of the song, and not something to imitate." -- Bruno Mars

"Just The Way You Are" (3:39) Guess what? YES! Another love song but there's a very subtle difference.
This one he says he loves her just the way she is, he loves her with all her flaws because she is gorgeous and amazing. He loves everything about her and he wouldn't change a thing. Just The Way You Are it's one of those songs that every girl wished to be written for her, wished that she was the subject. It's a romantic song, a lovers song that emphasizes the female beauty and a pretty young and beautiful relationship. The video of this song was inspired on the amazing work of Erika Iris Simmons.

"When I see your face

There's not a thing that I would change
Cause you're amazing
Just the way you are
And when you smile,
The whole world stops and stares for a while
Cause girl you're amazing

"Our First Time" (4:01) is probably my least favourite song of the album. Too but too cliché! For me there's no point of having this song here. It's way too calm to be at the beginning of the track list.
At least Mars should have put this song at the end, it would fit very well but probably the thematics aren't correct to be at the bottom so, in my opinion, this song should be off the record, specially when the song is so personal, that should be added to a single or one of Bruno Mars' EP, which would have gone better. With everyone I spoke about this song share the same opinion. It's unnecessary to the record which, in general, is pretty good.

"Runaway Baby" (2:27) sounds so relaxed and funny. That back guitar rocks, it's so damn strong! It makes wanting to dance and rock and roll! I enjoy this song very much. It has a few amazing ska lines, doesn't it? I really like the fresh rhythm and style. It's so funny and hilarious. A bit of irony can be notice on the song, which makes it even more enjoyable!

"I love you so

That's what you'll say
You'll tell me
Baby, baby, please don't go away
But when I play, I never stay"

"The Lazy Song" (3:14) the most perfect song for lazy people. It describes them perfectly, I am seriously impressed. When I read the title I laughed so much but after all the song is pretty relaxing and funny.
The way that the ukelele is played and the slow rhythmic drums emphasizes the hole effect. When we talk about this song it's impossible not to mention the video which is hilarious and very simple."Home made"videos style should be used more often!

"Today I don't fell like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed

Don't fell like pickin up my phone

So leave a message at the tone

'Cause today I swear I'm not doing anything"

"Marry You" (3:48) Yeah! Another cliché song that trivializes the concept of getting married but still a very gorgeous love song. Fox's very known series GLEE made a marvelous version of it and only helps to show the romantic side of Mars.
The piano church gives this traditional idea of weddings that is a bit lost nowadays.
Five "Hurrah!" to Bruno Mars for bringing back the idea of wedding (except the "easy" idea of getting married that makes everything sounding too much easy).

"Is it the look in your eyes,

Or is it this dancing juice?

Who cares baby?
I think I wanna marry you"

"Talking To The Moon" (3:36) it's like he is talking to the girl he misses and wants back using the metaphor of the moon as a messenger. Gives a little mystic to the song and somehow brings a bit more light but sadness at the same time. We can feel what he is feeling, we can not stop feeling sorry for him and wishing that he has that girl back. Seems to have a little idea of a failed relationship and a self-destruction behavior.

"Liquor Store Blues" (3:47) this one is featuring with the song of Bob "King of Reggae" Marley, Damian Marley. The reggae style suits Bruno Mars so well! I would love to see him doing more often.
Besides the dark subject of self-destruction in this case through alcohol. Still is one of my favorites, the collaboration worked perfectly and showed the instruments that are damn stunning.

"Coz my job got me going no where

So I ain't got a thing to lose

Take me to a place where I don't care
This Is me, and my liquor store blues"

"Count on Me" (3:16) to be listen at a sunset, near a beach or at a bar with people you love. This song is about friendship and supporting each other no matter what happens.
It has a very Hawaiian sound, I could almost bet we got inspiration on a similar scenario. Gorgeous, simple and Mars show how much he is here to stay.
Not the best but in very good way to be. I must be a suspect but when Summer arrives I totally love these types of songs to relax and enjoy life with good company.
I totally suggest you to play it on your next meeting with friends and on the beach.

"The Other Side" (3:46) with the huge Cee-Lo Green and the very known B.O.B. The three separated parts are very distinguish which brings something glorious and explosive to this song.
When I heard it the first time, got stuck on the repeat mode for months! I love love the sound, the mix of this fast and correct guitar, those awesome effects and the revolutionary drums. One of the saddest things is the live version of this song, using it as a beginning and on a acoustic way it's not worth it, the song is so much better with the entire magnificent instruments.
The lyrics are so mysterious and powerful! I totally loved the collaborations and besides the song is absolutely  favorite Bruno Mars' song. The video is too simple, the passion left from this album is staying with me ALWAYS, I totally share the feelings and stuff but still there's something to be discovered.

Conclusion: The album is pretty good for a beginner - noticed that Mars worked on other huge hits but never his own songs before - except for one or two songs this album would be on the top, but it's very nice, lovely and catchy and gets really stuck in your mind so it's a very good option, not the best but on the right track.

My final choice for this amazing themed week related with the REGGAE world is the king, the master, the father of this feeling, this form of life.
Bob Marley is not only a revolutionary, he is the mentor of Reggae.



So by him meaning so much to reggae makes much sense to be Bob Marley to end this themed week.
