Playlist Spotify: Setembro/2014 - por Mike Bek

Para quem acompanha o Mike Bek desde que este começou a interessar-se por música é notória a evolução deste artista. O Mike Bek é um dos Novos Talentos Fnac e o dia 10 de Julho marcou o lançamento do seu EP "Legacy".

O FYMS convidou-o para fazer a playlist Spotify do mês de Setembro.

Numa mistura interessante de artistas portugueses e internacionais como Chet Faker, D'ALVA, Francis Dale ou Jack White, sem esquecer o seu projecto, o Mike Bek escolhe músicas versáteis, talvez desconhecidas para os mais distraídos, que vão animar o regresso ao trabalho e aos estudos de muitos dos que nos seguem.

Entrevista // Yesterday

O projecto Yesterday, liderado pelo português Pedro Augusto, ganhou, em 2006, o festival Termómetro Unplugged e em 2012, participou na compilação Novos Talentos FNAC e venceu, igualmente, o prémio Jovens Criadores.

Em conversa com o FYMS, Pedro Augusto vai falar sobre as suas influências, do seu mais recente trabalho The Waiting e da forma como se revê enquanto músico.

FYMS: Yesterday é o nome deste projecto. Alguma vez pensaste fazer música com o teu nome – Pedro Augusto?

Sim! Houve uma altura, entre 2006 e 2009, em que descobri que conseguia cantar em português. Até aí tinha sido muito difícil expressar-me musicalmente na nossa língua e não conseguia encontrar uma forma de cantar as palavras que se arrastasse e que não fosse agressiva na dicção. Quando, ao ouvir muitas histórias antigas dos meus avós, eu comecei a anotar as palavras deles e a transformá-las em música, a palavra “Yesterday” teve um pequeno percalço e, por momentos, achei que o meu nome próprio era a melhor expressão desse período. Mais tarde, apercebi-me que a palavra “Yesterday” não tinha perdido assim tanto o sentido e nunca cheguei a abandoná-la.

FYMS: Quais são as tuas principais influências para a tua música?

Eu cresci a ouvir Cranberries. Contudo, quando a banda terminou, deparei-me com uma espécie de vazio; quase como se eu, depois disso, tivesse que descobrir música pela primeira vez. Foi aí que eu involuntariamente encontrei os Dead Can Dance, Mazzy Star, Pj Harvey, Bjork, Radiohead e que são influências, não porque influenciam a minha música directamente, mas porque, indirectamente, marcaram um novo período da minha vida pessoal – uma espécie de entrada na idade adulta. Mas, em geral, não sou um grande apaixonado por música.

FYMS: Onde te revês enquanto músico?

Um pouco à margem da indústria musical. Às vezes, sinto-me nos limites de um círculo onde nem toda a gente entra e apercebo-me, ao mesmo tempo, que prefiro ficar cá fora.

FYMS: Lançaste o teu sexto disco sob o nome “The Waiting”? Houve muita espera?

O sentimento de espera não esteve relacionado com a divulgação do álbum, nem com as condições da sua gravação. Teve a ver mais com o sentimento que está por detrás da construção de um álbum. Geralmente, este sentimento de espera esteve e estará sempre presente: as minhas músicas nascem sempre de um sentimento mais ou menos forte de fascínio por algo que nunca se deixará ver e isso implica sempre uma espera. No período subjacente a este álbum, isso expressou-se ainda com mais força.

FYMS: Sentes que este novo trabalho está a ter uma maior aceitação pelo público?

Este é o primeiro álbum onde decidi fazer uma divulgação profissional e, por isso, é normal que o seu alcance seja maior. Hoje em dia, apercebo-me, cada vez mais, que o alcance de um produto tem menos a ver com a maior ou menor qualidade do mesmo, mas com os meios disponíveis para o poder divulgar.

FYMS: Existe algum artista com quem gostasses de trabalhar?

Sou um pouco fascinado com sons electrónicos e samples. Quando ouço um ritmo, começo logo, involuntariamente, a arranjar melodias para sobrepor. Por isso, gostaria de trabalhar com alguém que me fizesse desbloquear essas melodias. Neste momento, já me encontro a trabalhar com um artista americano nesse sentido. Não posso, contudo, esconder o meu fascínio pela PJ Harvey.

FYMS: Como achas que está música Portuguesa?

É um pouco difícil responder a esta pergunta. Às vezes temos um pouco a noção de que a música Portuguesa é apenas aquilo que se ouve nas rádios. Já há lugar para os artistas portugueses nos canais de divulgação, mas para lá chegar continuam a ser precisos meios (sobretudo financeiros). Acho que a qualidade dos projectos musicais não está nada relacionada com qualidade de gravação, prestação ao vivo ou com o facto de aparecer ou não na rádio. Há por aí projectos que se mantêm na “sombra” e que são muito mais entusiasmantes do que as coisas às quais temos um acesso mais ou menos massificado.

FYMS: Perguntas da Praxe:

a) Um dia... gostava de poder viver para criar.

b) O melhor que podem dizer sobre mim... é ser honesto.

c) O pior que podem dizer sobre mim... é que não adapto e que isso é sinal de preguiça.

d) Daqui a 10 anos... vou estar, provavelmente, a gravar em casa o meu 11º disco.

FYMS: Quais são os próximos planos para Yesterday?

Como eu nunca paro de compor, já há novos temas para além dos do “The Waiting”. Alguns deles podem passar por colaborações com outros músicos, sobre as quais me encontro já a trabalhar. Encontro-me a fazer pequenas apresentações ao vivo e assim continuarei nos próximos meses.

FYMS: O que dirias aos leitores do FYMS?
Que, hoje em dia, quanto mais fácil acesso temos às coisas, mais temos que nos esforçar por encontrar outras… Espero que encontrem o meu novo álbum!

Yesterday edita "The Waiting"

Yesterday lançou online, a 7 de Abril, o seu sexto trabalho, The Waiting.

O projecto, liderado pelo português Pedro Augusto, ganhou, em 2006, o festival Termómetro Unplugged e em 2012, participou na compilação Novos Talentos FNAC e venceu, igualmente, o prémio Jovens Criadores.
De acordo com o músico, este disco "fala da esperança, constemente renovada, da espera e, às vezes, da sua negação", como se pode ler aqui.

Até à data, já foram lançados os singles Destruction e para celebrar o lançamento do disco, mais dois singles Isolation e September.

Alex D'Alva Teixeira, Homologação

Almost a year ago, we were presented to the new figure of the Portuguese music scene: Alex D'Alva Teixeira and his upbeat 3tempos.
In the summer, he released his debut EP Não é um projecto showing that he was coming to stay - for good!

Now, we are given Homologação, a cosmic kuduro that portraits what's coming with AD'AT first record.

Ben Monteiro, now one of the new members of D'Alva's world, said "We dedicated a lot of our time and effort into these songs, becoming impossible to see where does Alex end and where do I begin".
With Ben, Vitor Hugo Azevedo, Gonçalo de Almeida and Ricardo Ramos are now the musicians that follow Alex - the process was "natural, that came to leave a permanent mark in the songs that are coming".

This video is the perfect reflection of how natural their relation can be. Ben Monteiro is the director of this low-budged video - that was recorded with the challenge of using only a 10 € (a pair of lights, a chocolate and a coca-cola).

In a year, everything has changed, including Alex. About his own changes, he said "We've always assumed that we make Pop, in the most independent and different way, we expect that the people understand that our compromise is to produce good songs, independently of its category, and more than ever we have the perfect idea of where we want to go. We are D'Alva."

Ciclo Preparatório, Lena Del Rey

Ciclo Preparatório are a really young Portuguese band composed by Sebastien, Pape, Graça, Consolação, Constança and Benedita in March 2012.

They are preparing their debut record, to be released in April through the label Optimus Discos.

The first single is Lena Del Rey, earlier released in the compilation Novos Talentos FNAC, in 2012.
This first entry through Ciclo Preparatório's work is an innocent adventure between the bushes of the Portuguese language and a honest reflection of Portugal's society with a few glimpses of an imagined world.

Lena Del Rey sounds like a fresh, out of the world anthem - at first, our first thoughts (obviously) go to the American singer Lana Del Rey but as soon as we listen to this track we get involved in this dreamy, catchy and really "traditional" song.
They are different, they are new and fresh but Ciclo Preparatório don't forget their roots and pay such a beautiful tribute in this song with beautiful harmonies, soft lyrics and a really good bunch of talented people behind the project.

Absolutely, one of the must-listen Portuguese bands in 2013.

Vitorino Voador, Carta de Amor Foleira

Vitorino Voador is the other "persona" created by the Portuguese João Gil.
The name came from two beautiful moments of his music career - one from a mistake he'd seen on a poster and another when he was photographed jumping from a car.
The image was made by his sister and Vitorino Voador is now something real.

This persona came from the need to leave the known self behind and become something new and fresh.
Vitorino Voador creates his own language and tells his own songs. According to Time Out, he would be described something like "a weird pop maker".

The first single is Carta de Amor Foleira. The song appeared on the compilation Novos Talentos FNAC 2012 and is also included on Vitorino Voador's first EP.

This fantastic EP Vitorioso Voo counts with six songs and it was released through Optimus Discos, produced by João Gil and José de Castro and masterized by Bernardo Barata.
The EP counts a story whose second chapter is already being written and planned to be released somewhere in the beginning of 2013.

Nowadays, João Gil, who's born in Lisbon in 1980, is part of such different bands like You Can't Win, Charlie Brown, Feromona and Diabo na Cruz.

Salto, Deixar Cair

Salto is the Portuguese word for Jump and is also the name of a Portuguese band created in 2007 by Guilherme Tomé Ribeiro and Luis Montenegro, with only 16 years old. Nowadays, they also count with the talented Tito Romão.

In 2010 they were part of Novos Talentos FNAC and Amor Fúria - Depósito de Inúteis from Optimus Discos, participating in big festivals like Optimus Alive.

But 2012 is their year. The homonym album is set to be released next July 2, after a year and a half of hard work. Influenced by such different bands and artists like Rufus Wainwright, Arctic Monkeys or the Portuguese Ornatos Violeta they created a new kind of expression, a new youth style where they celebrate their mother language and mostly where they celebrate Pop.

Full of personality and freshness from people with early twenties, their sound goes somewhere between the 60's to dance, with a bit of New Order and Pet Shop Boys 80's characteristic melodies and at some point some of James Blake.

Salto's record was produced by New Max - better known for being part of Expensive Soul.

The presentation single is the delicious, incredible and really catchy Deixar Cair.

Alex D'Alva Teixeira, 3tempos

Alex D'Alva Teixeira a new talent from the Portuguese scenario that everyone should follow.

You can't talk about Alex D'Alva Teixeira without mentioning his impressive talent, his simplicity that blows your mind and his vicious sound.

Officially his career has started in 2006 and since then he has collaborated with big names of the Portuguese music like Tiago Guillul and Ben Monteiro.
In 2011 he participated in the song Barulho for the mixtape 20 Anos de Ruptura Explosiva, a collaboration work between Flor Caveira and Amor Fúria. Later that year he releases Mixtape - songs where he collaborates with names fro Hip-Hop, Indie and Pop.

Last February he stayed on the second place of the 17th edition of Festival Termómetro and it's one of the fantastic names to be included on the next compilation of Novos Talentos FNAC.

He already has big supporters like Samuel Fúria from Amor Fúria. Samuel Fúria wrote his press release where he mentions Alex D'Alva Teixeira has one of the newest and most interesting things, his endless talent and his capacity of creating something really fresh, new and being so impressive.
He also refers to him has D'Alva Star.

His EP Não É Um Projecto is going to be released next June 25 through Flor Caveira and he will make a live showcase on June 30, on Fnac Chiado in Lisboa.

Later this year he might release his first record.

His first video 3tempos was directed by Ben Monteiro - three different concepts, three different Alex's and three takes. The video was produced, filmed and edited in three days so it really fits the song's title.
On this video Alex shows three versions of himself and his simplicity makes it work.
